Music helped us get through 2020

2020 has undeniably been a tough year for the whole world. Our lives stopped when the COVID-19 pandemic hit us hard in the beginning of a year we thought would be a lucky one. But despite the downs, music has been consistent in staying with us to help us get through the tough times.

Here on uDOu, we’re wrapping up the year that was with some of the biggest hits that were released this 2020. Check out our list, in no particular order. Are your repeat buttons ready?

Blinding Lights – The Weeknd

Abel Tesfaye, more popularly known as The Weeknd, dominated various 2020 charts with his song ‘Blinding Lights’ from his album ‘After Hours’. It may have been snobbed at the 2021 GRAMMY nominations, but ‘Blinding Lights’ is undeniably one of the biggest hits of 2020.

death bed (coffee for your head) – Powfu, beabadobee

Canadian artist Powfu’s breakthrough hit ‘death bed (coffee for your head)’ enjoyed millions of plays on TikTok. The track samples British-Filipina artist beabadobee’s ‘Coffee’, which was released back in 2017. We’re pretty sure a lot of you were given the last song syndrome by this Powfu track.

Marikit – Juan Caoile, Kyle

Speaking of TikTok, another song that gained huge popularity through the app is ‘Marikit’ by Filipino artists Juan Caoile and Kyle. The #MarikitDanceChallenge went viral early this year which really helped the song gain a lot of traction. We can’t wait to hear more music from these two talented young artists!

Intentions – Justin Bieber feat. Quavo

Justin Bieber’s only intention is to put out music that’s worth adding to our playlists, and he certainly did that with ‘Intentions’. Coming from his latest album ‘Changes’, ‘Intentions’ is a collaboration with rapper Quavo. The track is a heart-melting ode to that someone whom you’re willing to shower with your love and attention.

Puhon – TJ Monterde

Singer-songwriter TJ Monterde showcases the beauty of the Bisaya dialect in his track ‘Puhon’, which means “In God’s time”. TJ’s track certainly brought hope to a lot of people during these trying times.

At My Worst – Pink Sweat$

American singer-songwriter Pink Sweat$ caught the attention of many with his song ‘At My Worst’. With its catchy beat and relatable lyrics, Pink Sweat$ definitely earned its more than 52 million streams on Spotify. Of course, who wouldn’t want someone who’ll love you at your worst?

Lumipas Ang Tag-Araw – Sponge Cola

One of the most relatable songs released this year, Sponge Cola’s ‘Lumipas Ang Tag-Araw’ expresses almost everyone’s lives during this 9-month lockdown. You really can’t help but jam to this catchy track from Gosh, Armo, T-mac, and Yael.

MORE & MORE – TWICE

K-Pop girl group TWICE blessed us with the release of their song ‘MORE & MORE’ from their 9th mini album with the same name. The girls really brought us more and more of what we need during lockdown!

I CAN’T STOP ME – TWICE

Another TWICE track making it to our list is ‘I CAN’T STOP ME’. The girls of TWICE were really unstoppable this year with the back-to-back release of their mini album ‘MORE & MORE’ and full album ‘EYES WIDE OPEN’.

Lifetime – Ben&Ben

Probably one of the multiple Ben&Ben tracks on our list, ‘Lifetime’ once again captured the hearts of their fans. With their signature rhythm, flow, and lyricism, the track instantly became a hit when it first came out this year.

Balang Araw – Inigo Pascual

A song that speaks about staying hopeful after a lost love, ‘Balang Araw’ by Inigo Pascual is one of those #hugot songs we’ll play on repeat. Raise your hand if you shed a tear while listening to this song.

cardigan – Taylor Swift

Just when you thought 2020 couldn’t get any better, Taylor Swift came through and surprised everyone with her 8th album ‘folklore’. Taylor ushered in the new era with its carrier single ‘cardigan’, which as of writing already has over 175 million streams on Spotify.

Break My Heart – Dua Lipa

When Dua Lipa said ‘stay at home’, you literally need to stay at home. 2020 was a big year for the 25-year old artist with her newest album ‘Future Nostalgia’ spawning multiple hits including ‘Break My Heart’. Dua is set for an exciting 2021 as she’s up for 6 categories at the 63rd GRAMMY Awards.

Patawad – Moira Dela Torre

The final track in her ‘Patawad, Paalam’ trilogy, Moira Dela Torre once again tore the hearts of many and has left us all crying buckets of tears with ‘Patawad’.

How You Like That – BLACKPINK

The comeback we needed this 2020, K-Pop girl group BLACKPINK came storming back with the release of ‘How You Like That’, giving BLINKS a taste of what they can expect from their first full album ‘THE ALBUM’.

Ice Cream – BLACKPINK with Selena Gomez

Come a little closer ‘cos we’ve got another BLACKPINK track on our list! The 4-piece group collaborated with American pop star Selena Gomez for ‘Ice Cream’. The song, which is also part of ‘THE ALBUM’, already has over 213 million streams on Spotify, as of writing.

Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat) – Jawsh 685, Jason Derulo

Another track made popular by TikTok, Savage Love took over 2020 with its catchy beat and viral dance challenge which had everyone around the world hopping on the trend. Instant LSS!

Di Ka Sayang – Ben&Ben

Another one from Ben&Ben on our list is their uplifting track ‘Di Ka Sayang’. Despite all of our insecurities, the song’s heartfelt message served as a big help to a lot of people. You are appreciated, and you are never alone.

Paubaya – Moira Dela Torre

‘Ako yung nauna, pero siya ang wakas.’. Who would forget this heartbreaking track from Moira Dela Torre? Whether you’re heartbroken or not, ‘Paubaya’ will never fail to make you feel a certain amount of sadness. We’ve asked this many times and we’ll ask it again: Inaano ka ba namin, Moira?

Hanggang Sa Huli – SB19

There’s nowhere but up for SB19. 2020 has been a remarkable year for Josh, Stell, Sejun, Ken, and Justin with the release of their 1st album ‘Get In The Zone’, multiple awards, as well as their first ever virtual live concert. After taking over the charts with ‘Alab (Burning)’, the boys released their mellow track ‘Hanggang Sa Huli’ which gives listeners those emotional K-drama feels. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for SB19 this 2021!

Dynamite – BTS

Undeniably one of the biggest hits this 2020, ‘Dynamite’ earned BTS their first ever GRAMMY nomination, alongside multiple record-breaking milestones. The 7-piece K-Pop group really lit up the world like dynamite and there’s just no stopping their world domination.

2020 may be a very challenging year, but these songs didn’t fail to help us get through it! Looking forward to more hits this 2021!
