2019 gave us some memorable melodies and banging bangers and it’s time we list down the best ones!
Before the year ends, it’s only proper that we give a nod to the music that accompanied us throughout 2019. So before we properly wrap the year up, here are the Top OPM Songs of 2019!
But what exactly are the qualifications to be a top OPM song? Well, I’m sure we don’t have to tell you that the best kind of music are not the ones heard by your ears, but by your heart. The kind of songs that make you feel things, that tug at your heartstrings, or the kind that make you smile. So that’s why everything you can find on this list, is bound to make you feel some sort of emotion.
Kung ‘Di Rin Lang Ikaw by December Avenue, Moira Dela Torre
So first and foremost, we have to mention the song that broke everyone’s heart this 2019, ‘Kung Di Rin Lang Ikaw’ by December Avenue. This collaboration between December Avenue and Moira Dela Torre is definitely one of the Top OPM Songs of 2019. And we can say that confidently because December Avenue is Spotify PH’s Most Streamed Artist for this year. Along with Moira Dela Torre bagging the third spot for Most Streamed Female Artist. We’re sure we don’t have to remind you how this song completely shattered our non-broken hearts. Because even if you aren’t going through heartbreak, this song will make you feel like you are.
Sana by I Belong to the Zoo
And maybe this is a weird pattern, but Filipinos do love Love Songs, tragic love songs in particular. And that’s why the second song we’re featuring is ‘Sana’ by I Belong To The Zoo. Now, we’ve had the pleasure of interviewing IBTZ in person this year. And we just have to say that the inspiration for this song is purely genuine. And if that doesn’t make it more heart-wrenching we don’t know what will. So although the song was originally released in 2018, it only skyrocketed in popularity this year.
Nang Iwan by This Band
Everything about ‘Nang Iwan’ by This Band, is absolutely perfect. The MV, the lyrics, Andrea Manzano’s vocals, everything was just spot on! Including Yassi Pressman’s performance in the MV as well. At first, we loved the song as is. It told the story of the pain and heartbreak of being left behind. But what sealed the deal was how they interpreted heartbreak and loss from a different perspective. Admittedly, one we did not see coming but we absolutely loved anyway. And we can definitely say that this song will only increase in popularity over time.
Pagtingin by Ben and Ben
It’s been a busy year for Ben & Ben, and a fruitful one as well since they just released their first full album. But taking all things into account, with their single and album releases, our favorite remains with ‘Pagtingin’. This one definitely strays from the pattern of heartbreak songs that we previously mentioned. But it is well-deserving, and definitely made a lot of people relate with it. After all, a feel-good song about falling in love is bound to be a cult-favorite, right? Especially if you partner that up with the unique musical stylings of Ben & Ben.
Go Up by SB19
‘Go Up’ by SB19 is the most surprising thing to happen in the OPM scene this 2019! And what a welcome surprise it is, who would have thought that these five young dreamers would go up and reach this high within a year? SB19’s ‘Go Up’ is definitely an automatic addition as a Top OPM Song of 2019. And we’re definitely looking forward to bigger and better things from them this 2020!
Overall, 2019 was a busy year for the world of OPM. We can honestly say that within this year, the appreciation for our local music scene has grown significantly. And we couldn’t be prouder! And it’s not only the listener’s music tastes that have grown, but also the style of music from artists all across the board. It has grown into a genre that most people can now resonate with. So here’s to more groundbreaking feats in the years to come!
