#RandomThoughts: We Miss One Direction

We’ve tried playing it cool, but sometimes the thought just hits us: we miss the boys!

It was almost ten years ago when the English-Irish pop boyband was formed on XFactor. Strangely enough, the memory is still fresh in our minds: Niall’s Bieber-look, Liam’s crooner style, Louis’ sweet rendition of Hey There Delilah, Harry’s Isn’t She Lovely and Zayn’s stunning vocals. Back then, most of us were still in early high school,  obsessing over Plants Vs. Zombies and passing around slam books. We can’t help but wonder now: has it really been that long? Yes, titos and titas. It has been that long.

The next five years

On September 11, 2011, they had their debut single What Makes You Beautiful. Shortly after that, they released their first-ever album Up All Night, which became a massive hit, taking the number 1 spot on music charts in many countries around the world. The music video for One Thing gave them their first VMAS for Best New Artist, Best Pop Video, and Most Share-Worthy Video.

Success was non-stop. Every new release showcased their charm and undeniably good talents. Even those who were not fans of the pop genre would give an approving nod towards One Direction’s music. They were catchy, but not annoying. They were surprisingly good, some of them had deep, profound lyrics. Their fanbases wouldn’t stop growing. Directioners were everywhere.

But it must come to an end

In March, 2015, Zayn decided to part ways with the group.

Zayn stated: “My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band. I’d like to apologise to the fans if I’ve let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart. I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight. I know I have four friends for life in Louis, Liam, Harry and Niall. I know they will continue to be the best band in the world.”

In 2016, One Direction officially split to pursue their own careers.

At the wrap-up of their tour in 2015, the boys had apparently decided not to renew their contract anymore for reasons we could only speculate about. Some fans called it a hiatus, but as time went by, they came to accept that a reunion would no longer happen. Directioners and even non-Directioners were saddened. I mean, here’s a pop band that produces legitimately good music. Their pretty looks and cheeky smiles are just the cherry on top. One Direction has radically shaped the boyband category in the pop genre, establishing their own unique sound. But after five years, it went over.

We miss them

There are too many memories attached to the band and their songs. We basically grew up with them. They were the song when we were in love, the background music when we wanted to chill out with our friends. We played them when we wanted to celebrate life. Their music played a big part in our teenage years.

But we’re more than thankful. The band may have gone, but the boys are still there, and we get to witness how they slay it in their own direction. Occasionally, though, there’s a question that just pops in the air.

What if?
