Synthpop OPM band, One Click Straight, drops a new single following the launch of their first all-Tagalog EP, Harana Coma.
I am betting that One Click Straight has already gained a lot of fans as they made noise last 2019 and released a lot of awesome singles. To hype more their fans and encourage them as well, the candy-pop, synthpop band patterned verses that mirror the reality in the new normal.
To be honest, it shares the same feels of frustrations when it comes to a lot of hindrances or whenever we felt restricted and stifled. Too relatable, isn’t it? If you wanna scrape off those nuisances, jam with us along below with the official audio of ‘Sumaya, Sumigaw, Huminga’.
Art in the New Norm
Being hunkered down at our own respective homes for long months is not that easy. But despite all those hindrances of distance and producing music in the midst of a pandemic, One Click Straight still managed to record ‘S.S.H’ which stands for Sumaya, Sumigaw, Huminga as a product of creative frustration mainly due to the circumstances brought about by COVID-19.
“There were a few months that we didn’t do anything. We all just tried to survive through COVID. But the thing is, if you’re a musician and a writer, you will always end up itching to write and to create more music. This is for the sake of our artistry. We just wanna make something that we’re happy with. Rock and roll, bahala na. We were thinking let’s just write songs the way we want and the way we can. We didn’t have a studio, we didn’t have much gear here at home. It’s the complete opposite of what we were doing before.” expressed by Sam Marquez.
On top of that, One Click Straight actually saw this as an opportunity to be more daring and throw the “rules” of their creative process out the window. With limited gear and equipment, Toffer Marquez, Tim Marquez, and Joel Cartera eventually offered a track that aims literally to make us ‘Sumaya, Sumigaw, Huminga’ while enduring and surviving in the pandemic.
Despite a Hopeless Situation
Upon listening to their new track, it gives us a more raw and real sound that OCS has never been explored before.
“I think that’s what started this: the attitude of [going] back to our punk rock roots and trying to make songs with a cheaper mic, recording drums in a weird way (since we don’t have a drum kit here). So we locked ourselves in that atmosphere where we just…make stuff.” Sam added.
“One of the things that I want people to remember about the EP is that it’s a statement coming from a hopeless situation, but with a hopeful heart. It’s a hopeful outlook for the future as much as our lyrics are about missing someone, [whether] they passed away or something, and [about] frustration and anxiety. We’re longing for something greater, something better with a hopeful heart,” Tim Marquez shared.
