It’s the legendary comedian showing the young ones once again how song parodies must be done.

Filipino actor/comedian Michael V, also known as Bitoy, is back at it again as he drops his newest song parody after a long time. This time, he’s mocking the viral incident involving the Grab driver who got called out by a barangay official for delivering lugaw, or porridge, in Bulacan amidst the Enhanced Community Quarantine in the NCR+ bubble. The said incident became a national laughingstock due to the barangay official insisting that lugaw is non-essential and therefore should be banned.

Entitled ‘Essential Lang,’ Michael V.’s latest creation was inspired by the song ‘Torpedo,’ a popular track by the legendary band Eraserheads. The edited lyrics take a jab at the confrontation that transpired after the rider, Marvin Ignacio, was stopped by the police and the barangay official.

“Essential lang / Lugaw po ay ‘di pa nakalista / Iba na lang ang kainin / Wala ring magagawa,” Bitoy says in the song.

As usual, Bitoy managed to bring out the identity of the original song despite changing the lyrics. You could almost hear Ely Buendia in the parody, thanks to Bitoy’s ever-impressive vocal impersonation. The verses were also smoothly crafted, it’s almost like you’re listening to the original song despite the edited lyrics. If you’re one of us, nineties kids, who grew up with Bubble Gang, you’d know that these features are what made us enjoy Bitoy’s parodies. (Though we don’t suggest reviving their popularity today, considering how problematic some of them are.)

However, as hilarious as its subject matter may be, the music video for ‘Essential Lang’ ends with an important message about what’s really essential during these trying times– things such as wearing a face mask, staying at home, obeying the law, and praying for the world.
