Taylor Swift isn’t just a pop singer-songwriter. She’s an icon and a role model for a lot of people in the whole world. After the dark turn, her music took with her latest album ‘Reputation’, she aimed to set things straight with her new found sound. After releasing her first single, ‘ME!‘ for her new album ‘Lover’, people found themselves sucked in in the impending positivity her music implores. And she does not disappoint because just right in time for Pride Month, she voices out her political stand with her song ‘You Need to Calm Down’.
You Need To Calm Down
Grand and awe-inspiring, ‘You Need To Calm Down’ is Taylor’s LGBT rights stand. Released in amidst of Pride Month, it calls out social media trolls and anti-LGBT people from their unpleasantries. Both in the social media space and real life. Not to mention, it also scolds homophobic protesters trying to silence the LGBT community for fighting for their rights. It also addresses how sexist pop fans and critics try to pit famous female artists against each other. When in fact, these female artists have their own crowns of their own.
At the same time, the music video of ‘You Need To Calm Down’ dropped too. The video showed a pastel-colored trailer park where prominent LGBT community members live together along with Taylor herself. It was nothing but grand, to be honest. The whole music video seemed to pop out right out of your screen with the colors, glitzes, and glamour it has.
And the song itself was nothing but a bop. It had the same positivity vibe exuded in ‘ME!’. But this time, it’s a call to action. An anthem to be exact, for all people marginalized by the norms and conventions of the society. Unlike her previous songs, ‘You Need To Calm Down’ reminds calls everyone for equality and understanding. As someone who’ve stayed long in the dark, she’s now ready to stand for her political views and help in the long battle of rights for the LGBT community.
A call to action
As we all know, the music video featured some of the most famous LGBT personalities we know of. Ellen DeGeneres, Billy Porter, RuPaul, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Adam Lambert, Hannah Hart, and Tan France. We even have the cast of Queer Eye donned in their fancy glittering suits, handing over piping hot tea. Even Katy Perry was there! (They’ve made up! Aww!)
Having these personalities in her video hopes to prove a point. And that point is that the LGBT community has members that contribute so much to the betterment of society. And we are just blind to see that fact. The music video ended with Taylor Swift persuading fans to sign a petition urging the U.S Senate to pass the Equality Bill. This bill will help protect the LGBT community from discrimination.
As of now, the petition had garnered more than 222,000 signatures within a few hours.
