Not that we were complaining, but it’s about time Ben&Ben let us take a break from the tear-jerking love pieces that have turned YouTube’s comment section into a confession page.
The nine-piece collective dropped early Friday, November 6 their latest offering, ‘Di Ka Sayang,’ which is brimming with empowerment and the spirit of a bright, new beginning. Emotionally charged and more high-powered than their previous releases, the folk-pop band takes on the challenge of uplifting its listeners in their pursuit of self-love and acceptance.
In this powerful anthemic pop-rock, the MTV Europe Music Awards-
nominated band becomes a friend who’s giving us a necessary hard pat in the back, reminding us that we’re all worthy of love, support, and encouragement whatever demons we’re facing. Fans will take notice of how different this track sounds different compared to Ben&Ben’s folk-acoustic musical identity we’ve gotten used to hearing. While their trademark lyricism still shines through in each verse, this one’s more on the rock side– a mark of a definitive new era for Ben&Ben.
Guitarist and vocalist Paolo Benjamin reveals that ‘Di Ka Sayang’ draws inspirations from a conversation he had with his brother, Miguel, in their hotel room during an out-of-town show last year.
“Migs and I were having a conversation on our career choices and how hard it was to fight for who we really are and what we want to do in life, amidst societal and family expectations,” Paolo explains. “A year later, we decided to release it, at a time where we feel it is most timely, with everything tough going on, and with many of our dreams being crushed by the pandemic and other circumstances.”
Keyboardist Patricia Lasaten also reveals that ‘Di Ka Sayang’ is the result of the band’s urge to challenge themselves by exploring new lyrical and musical territories.
“Our goal from the start is to create a vibe and sound like no other song of ours before: one that would immerse the listener into the message of the song, and into a mood that we wanted the message to be experienced in,” shares Pat– a point further enhanced by vocalist/guitarist Miguel Benjamin who adds, “We’ve also been exploring new soundscapes and writing about themes other than love and heartbreak, and we’ve been having a lot of fun in the process. Liwanag, and everyone who listens to us can expect more of these things to be shared to anyone who is willing to listen.”
An empowering anthem that carries a promise of brighter days ahead, Ben&Ben’s “Di Ka Sayang” is now available on all digital platforms worldwide via Sony Music. Stream it down below!
