There are plenty of talented singer-songwriters in the Philippines. So what makes Earl Generao different?
Earl Generao has been around since 2017. Or at least, that’s when he released his first single on Spotify—Lunas.
And as of writing, his Tweet promoting this single is still his pinned post on twitter.
I want to thank you all so much for waiting with me.

Since then, the 23-year-old artist has been working hard on his music. In fact, he has a fresh new single, which was released at 12MN! Listen to it here.
The single is called Katabi, and you might’ve heard it on Rappler’s Live Jam. If you haven’t, don’t worry ’cause we have the video below just for you!
Katabi is another acoustic masterpiece from Genarao. And this time, he steers away from the usual theme of slow songs. You know what we mean—love.
His first single ‘Lunas’ was a little more blatant about being about love and in love. To quote from the song,
Nalilito, hindi mo ba alam nandito lang ako
Para sa’yo, kahit ano ang kailangan mo.
Bumubugso damdamin ko para sayo,
Lahat ay tila handa nang makalimutan
Roughly, it translates in English as,
Confused, don’t you know that I’m just here
For you, I’ll give anything you need
My feelings are overwhelmingly pouring for you
I can’t seem to forget anything
In this song, you can feel the emotions in his words dig deep into your soul. And his rendition of this first original single of his stays true to his lyrics—pure and soulful. Want to play it on repeat? Listen to it on Spotify here.
If you’ve played the preview of his upcoming single above, you’d know that this type of raw emotion is a staple in Earl’s music. You might’ve even gotten some Jason Mraz vibes in his acoustic performance of ‘Katabi’.
Earl admits that Mr. A-Z is one of his biggest influences, along with Coldplay, John Mayer, Twenty One Pilots, Ed Sheeran, and local artists like Jensen and the Flips, Ebe Dancel, and Clara Benin. And with this diverse mix of inspirations, we can’t wait to hear more from this up and coming artist!
Getting Up Close and PEARLsonal
We’re sure that hearing these two originals from Earl got you just as excited about him as we are. So we got the scoop for YOU. Learn more about Earl from the singer-songwriter himself with this exclusive U Do U interview.
How did you start your career in music?
Earl: I started my career in music just like everyone else. I knew no one in the industry, so the first thing I did was to record a demo version of my song ‘Lunas’. [I then] sent it to every production [company] I saw online via Facebook and email, and [I] just waited for a reply. It was a long shot but I was blessed enough that a few replied and gave me gigs out of the hundreds (productions and individuals) that I messaged.
What made you decide to pursue music?
Earl: What made me pursue music is music itself. I will always be in awe of how powerful music is, how the mixture of words and music can help someone go through something or just celebrate life.
Under what genre would you classify your music? And what made you chose this genre?
Earl: Pop. But I also say acoustic rap, because I like fast-paced tunes.
Wow, nice! Can we know about your struggles in being an indie artist?
Earl: I am not an indie artist anymore, but when I was, my biggest struggle was to produce my own song. It was very challenging financially.
What advise can you share to those who plan to get their music out there, and share it to the world?
Earl: Just play. I’ve been playing for a little over a year now, and it gets really tiring at times. But if you believe that music is your calling, keep on playing and creating.
Aside from your new single, what else can we expect from you?
Earl: Hopefully a full-length album in the near future. (Earl will also be playing in Unique Salonga’s Grandma tour.)
