Ely Buendia Encourages Wise Voting in New Song ‘Metro’

Ely Buendia is making us choose between “Pangulo” and “Panggulo.”

His recent revelation that ‘Spoliarium’ is not about the alleged rape case of Pepsi Paloma might have come across as disappointing to some, but the OPM icon’s newly released material serves as proof that Ely can still brilliantly integrate storytelling with superb songwriting like he’s done for the last two decades.

The former Eraserheads frontman is taking a stand against incompetent leadership in his latest single dropped on March 15. Titled ‘Metro,’ the song takes a jab at certain political figures and their supporters, the classic Eheads style. Built upon the steady sound of guitar strumming and drums, it details the country’s struggles in the hands of these public servants, particularly in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, the economic downfall that left a myriad of Filipinos unemployed and hungry, and the dispute over Philippine land and seas. Sound-wise, ‘Metro’ is one big trip back to Eraserheads’ glory days, except the lyrics are a reflection of Ely’s frustrations with today’s political reality.

Bulag sila sa mga pahirap na iyong nararanasan / ‘Di nila naiintindihan/ At may mga nagbibingi-bingihan sa mga kasinungalingan/ ‘Di kaya sila ay bayaran?” said Buendia in the song, the music video of which can be watched on Youtube.

‘Metro,’ at its very core, is an anthem that encourages everyone to vote wisely in the 2022 elections. It’s part of a campaign called ‘WeNeedALeader PH,’ which, according to its official website, is driven by the mission “to educate people to think when voting for a leader.”
