The world was saddened with the suicides of rockers Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell back in 2017. Each committed suicide after wrestling for years with major depression. Comedians, musicians, writers and other creative types are known to struggle with mental illness. This is by no means a new observation as Aristotle once said, “No great genius has ever existed without a strain of madness.”
However, there are artists out there who can manage their mental illness alongside their career. Check them out:
One of the most outspoken advocates of mental health today, Halsey is not afraid to address the unsightly and ugly side of having bi-polar disorder. “I had tried to kill myself,” she told Billboard. After the attempt, she was sent to a psychiatric hospital, where she was diagnosed at 17 years old. After her suicide attempt, Halsey found a home on the Internet. She created a community though Tumblr, one she said was hard to be away from while she was hospitalized. She also touches a lot on her mental illness through her songs.
Singer / Songwriter in the indielectronica band Passion Pit, Michael Angelakos opened up to the public about his mental illness in a PSA in which he talks about his experiences with bipolar disorder. It’s part of Bring Change 2 Mind‘s #StrongerThanStigma campaign, which is specifically aimed at men. “Once I started accepting my mental condition, it stung for a little bit, and then everything improved,” he says. “When people ask me what it’s like to live with bipolar, you just have to adjust and figure out exactly how you’re going to live your life the way you want to live it and achieve what you want to achieve. But you can only do that once you get help.”
Demi Lovato has been very transparent about her mental illness and has championed mental health awareness in reaching out to her fans and to everyone by giving inspiring speeches and through her documentary that delves on her struggles with mental illness, eating disorder, drug addiction and the toxicity of fame behind it. One thing that has helped the singer overcome some of her health challenges is exercise where she explained in an interview with Best Health. “Any time I’m able to take my mind off any of my addictions, it’s very beneficial to me because you’re constantly thinking about what the next move is. It can transport you to a totally different place. I’m on a journey to discover what it’s like to be free of all demons.”
Kanye West was recently diagnosed with a “mental condition,” where he revealed in a sit-down conversation with radio host Big Boy. Although the musician declined to specify what he had been diagnosed with during the interview, West had already confirmed on his new album that he is bipolar, calling it his “superpower.” He says to Big Boy “I’m so blessed and so privileged because think about people that have mental issues that are not Kanye West that can’t go and make (an album) and make it feel like it’s all good.”
