Have you ever been called a simp? Do you recall why someone did that? If you’ve been accused of simping, you don’t really need to feel insulted. At least, not right away.

(via Giphy) 500 Days of Summer is considered as the ultimate simp movie primarily because Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character has effectively portrayed the conventional simp.

What is a simp?

Well, we’re not gonna be able to give you a solid definition of it, because even we are as confused about it as everyone else. To begin with, simp has no exact meaning. That’s despite the fact that it’s an overused word now. It just depends on someone saying it, what their intention is, and what they know about it.

The internet has turned it into an abbreviation for Sucker Idolizing Mediocre Pussy. But not everyone is aware of this; for others, simp is a shortened form of simpleton, and they use it to describe a person they deem as lacking common sense. The latter is actually one of the earlier definitions of the word, dating back to the early 20th century.

But then again, because simp has no known etymology, simping can be used to refer to the act of crushing hard on someone, such as when you stan a certain boy group so hard that you’re willing to be stepped on by them– that can be considered simping.

However, the most commonly accepted definition of simp is someone– typically a guy, although it also applies to any gender– who goes to great lengths just to please a person they like. A website that provides research-based explanations on current memes called Know Your Meme agrees to this. According to it, a simp is a “slang expression used to ridicule males who are perceived as being overly invested in a woman and acting submissive to that person.”

The next time someone calls you a simp, try to know first what they know about it. But if you and the other person are both aware of their intention because, let’s say, they caught you in the middle of begging a woman step on you in the hopes of getting laid, then it’s probably time for you to do some self-reflection. Because you’re being mocked, and for a good reason.
