Getting rid of hangovers can almost be considered as an art or craft. Some have magical hangover cures while others have the right recipes to kick that headache off.

Partying all night can be fun and exhilarating. However, the fatigue and dehydration will most probably follow the morning after partying. Here are a few (anecdotally) tried and tested tips on how to get over that hangover.

Drink Lots of Water

One of the major causes of hangovers is dehydration. Alcohol is a diuretic, which means that it makes you urinate more. This leads to a lot of fluids leaving your body faster than you can replace them.

Upon waking up after a night of heavy drinking, you should make it your life’s mission to drink a glass or two of water. While this isn’t an instant hangover cure, drinking water the whole day will replace your lost fluids.

An alternative to water can be sports drinks. That bottle of Gatorade could also help you replenish lost electrolytes after binge drinking Jagerbombs all night.

Eat Bland Foods

There is a common misconception that these so-called bland foods such as crackers and toast “absorb” the alcohol in your body thanks to all of the Bacardi cocktails you drank. While that isn’t exactly true, the carbs from these foods help raise our blood sugar levels back to their normal levels.

Drinking alcohol actually prevents your body from keeping the normal blood sugar level. What happens is that your body is still busy in the morning dealing with all the tequila shots you downed during the night. Help it by eating complex carbohydrates such as oatmeal or toast.

Eat Salty Eggs and Bananas

Besides being one of the staple foods for body builders, eggs can also help cure hangovers by providing the amino acid cysteine that helps break down toxins from all the rum coke you drank last night.

Adding a bit of salt also helps your body replenish some of the nutrients it lost. Be wary of using too much oil to fry an egg as it may exacerbate stomach acidity. Poached eggs are yummy.

Bananas also provide lost potassium for your body. It also helps that they are easy to eat without any preparation needed.

Rest More

Personally, I don’t like drinking the night before a work day. That’s because I’d probably need the half of the day tomorrow to rest and sleep the alcohol off. If you have a hangover and you force yourself to work, you’ll probably end up less productive.

Of course, don’t just sleep the whole day without eating or drinking anything. You’ll only prolong the headaches and fatigue. Eat and drink a little to help your body recover faster and then rest some more.

Hangover Prevention is Better than Cure

Contrary to popular belief, hangovers can actually be prevented. It’s also better to prevent it than having to deal with it the whole day after.

After a night of non-stop alcohol drinking, you can drink non-alcoholic fluids before sleeping. It also helps to eat a little.

If that seems to be cumbersome, try alternating between alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks during the night. Pace yourself. This way, you’ll be able to continually re-hydrate yourself.
