20 Things I’ve Learned In My 20 Years Of Existence

If you’re looking for some food for thought, here are 20 things I’ve learned in my 20 years of existence.

Ohh, birthdays. One of the best times of the years. A whole day dedicated to your existence. When I was a child, I’d get excited about the presents I was about to receive from my friends and family. But as I grew older, life unexpectedly handed me gifts more precious than any material thing in this world—valuable lessons. And even though sometimes, it was given harshly, I wouldn’t have it any other way because it made me who I am today.

So in the months before turning 20, I believe I’ve learned quite a bit about life. And you’re more than welcome to know them. Here are 20 important things I know so far.

1. Believe in yourself

In order to overcome the adversities of life, first and foremost, you need to believe in yourself. You can come across many people who can help you but there’s only you who can make your dreams come true. Have a little faith in yourself!

2. Be proud of who you are

Every person is different. You have to be proud of who you are because it’s what defines you. More than anything in this world, you must value your individuality. Never let anyone dictate what you are for who you are.

3. Let go

There will come a time in our lives that people will eventually leave. Or there are moments that aren’t just meant for us. And this inevitably of life we need to learn to accept. There’s always a reason why people or chances pass us by, it’s because destiny has something better for us.

4. Good things over a good time

Yes, we all know the flashy and enticing world of night outs or just having a good time. But as a grew older and wiser, I’d rather keep my body healthy than drown it with booze. Try going on a diet or maybe working out at the gym. Over time, you’ll get to see the benefit of it!

5. Hangovers get worse

And speaking of booze, hangovers are worst when you get older and older. Remember, we won’t be young forever so take of your bodies, people!

6. Take risks

In life, it’s all about taking risks. You won’t get anywhere if you’re just staring at your computer and thinking of pursuing something. Rather, get your butt off that chair and go out and start making progress! Every small step leads to greater opportunities, remember that!

7. Love without expecting anything in return

I know it’s hard but this is the cold harsh truth. If you happen to find someone who you’d be willing to give your everything to, don’t expect them to be the same as you. If you want to love someone, love them wholeheartedly and genuinely. And if they can’t see that, it’s their fault not yours.

8. People aren’t so bad

I know, I know. I keep on saying that there are a lot of bad people out there. But then again, there are some good ones. People who will be there for you till the end. And if you’re lucky enough to a true gem like them, don’t take them for granted.

9. Family over everything

We need to get it through our heads that our family will always be the people who will be there for you. I know some of you might argue with this but “family” doesn’t necessarily mean just your blood relatives. They’re not necessarily just your blood relatives, they can be your friends, classmates, partner–people who love you and appreciate your existence.

10. Following your dreams doesn’t make you selfish

Okay, who said following your dreams makes you selfish? Wrong! Just know that it’s your life, you’re entitled to do anything you want with it. Even if you have to sacrifice something in exchange for that dream, it’s fine as long your heart is in the right place and you don’t purposely hurt people along the way.

11. Stay in or stay out

In my 20 years of existence, I have come to appreciate the wonders of staying in at the comfort of my home. Drink a cup of coffee, read a book, or watch a movie, there are so many things you can do! But then again, this is just my cup of tea. If you’re the type to prefer going out then feel free to do so!

12. Stop pleasing everyone

You weren’t born in this world to be a people pleaser. Instead, do what pleases you and don’t give a damn about what others think.

13. You can cry

In the end, we’re all human and we all have emotions. Imagine yourself as a cup being filled with water. And what happens if that water doesn’t stop? It’s bound to spill. Just like our feelings. But it doesn’t mean your weak. Sometimes letting it all out through crying is the most courageous thing one can do. It’s being able to let yourself vulnerable–not something everyone can do.

13. Don’t be afraid to fall down

It’s okay to be wrong once in a while. When you fail in life, it doesn’t automatically make you a failure. It’s part of everyone’s life and no one is an exception.

14. Face challenges head-on

If life is giving you a hard time, prove that you’re much stronger than that.

15. Don’t give up

Need I say more? Never give up no matter what!

16. Trust the process

After you’ve done everything you could, let things be and let nature take its course. Everything that you’ve worked hard for is bound to happen. All it takes is a little time.

17. Say “NO” once in a while

Saying “no” to the things you know aren’t good for you is never wrong. It’s through the years we get wiser of what we actually need in life.

18. Being wrong in love

You’re young and you’re in love. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes like giving too much of yourself or loving the wrong partner. Heartache is our greatest teacher. Masakit, but we get to learn from it. So that when you finally meet the right one you’ll know how to deal with your relationship.

19. Be patient

Patience is a hard thing to attain with all the circumstances making life more miserable but here’s one tip for ya, you can’t control the flow of life. You just have to be patient and that goes without saying.

20. You don’t have to have it all figured out

I’m 20 years old but it’s still like I don’t have everything all figured out and neither will I in the future–which is alright. This is what makes life more exciting and fun, it’s that we don’t know what will happen and that’s why we have to face everything head-on.
