We play RPG’s because we wanna lose ourselves in a different world.

And so, for an RPG to be considered good, it has to have the ability to completely immerse players in the virtual universe it creates. This will be done by making sure that the setting, character building, plot, and overall gameplay are engaging.

Whether you wanna be a sword-wielding warrior and save an entire kingdom from an evil force, or you just wanna hunt down the boss of an evil corporation that turned the planet into a wasteland, one thing remains true. You seek to go on a long, thrilling quest in a fantasy world, where you can experience epic adventures of a lifetime that real life will never be able to provide.

This 2020, we’ve compiled the best RPGs on any platform that we’ve witnessed in the last years.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake

Kicking off this list is the remake of the 1997 PlayStation game of the same name, which has real-time action, strategic RPG gameplay, and a fantastic storyline all in one. Developed and published by Square Enix, FFVII Remake follows the iconic mercenary Cloud Strife, who joins eco-terrorist group AVALANCHE and must lead the quest to stop the evil megacorporation Shinra from exhausting the planet’s life essence. While staying true to the original story from 1997, this remake was able to expand on everything players loved about the RPG classic and gave it a breath of new life.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Hailed as one of the greatest video games of all time, Breath of the Wild is a 2017 action-adventure RPG that allows players to go on an epic quest across the vast kingdom of Hyrule. The story is set at the end of the famous Zelda timeline and follows a warrior named Link, who wakes up from a hundred-year sleep to defeat Calamity Ganon.

Critics applaud the game for its exceptional attention to detail and open-ended gameplay. With over 20 million copies sold by the year 2020, Breath of the Wild is currently the highest-selling Zelda title of all time and also one of the best selling video games ever.

Genshin Impact

Considered as the best game to have come out of 2020, this action-adventure RPG by China-based studio miHoYo boasts a vast, fantasy open-world environment that players can devote many hours of their time exploring. While the graphics and sound design are both an astounding masterpiece, its impressive combat system and open-world freedom are what’s mostly earning the approval of critics. And yep, you can play it for free on different platforms including PS4, Android, and iOS.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Before Polish developer CD Projekt Red launches their highly anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 this December, they already offered the world an RPG sensation that’s now cited as one of the best video games ever made. A direct sequel to 2011’s The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, Wild Hunt is another sensational action-adventure role-playing game that follows the monster slayer Geralt of Rivia. Stunning world design, fascinating narrative, and immersive gameplay are just a few of the reasons why this game is slated to become a modern classic.

Pokemon Sword and Shield

We’ve already experienced a lot of Pokemon RPG’s and its usual chronicling of a trainer traversing towns after towns, collecting and training Pokemons to become the League Champion. Still, that did not prevent us from falling in love with this game because, despite bringing back old traditions that we’ve experienced in the previous installments, Sword and Shield has added new and innovative elements and mechanics, making it another thrilling adventure to experience.

Dark Souls III

The final installment of the genre-defying Dark Souls trilogy, Dark Souls III is widely celebrated for providing a satisfying conclusion to an amazing video game series. Like its predecessors, it’s an action role-playing game played in a third-person perspective, and takes players in a massive, wonderfully created open world filled with twisted enemies and incredible secrets waiting to be uncovered. Regardless of the year you’re playing, Dark Souls III is an undeniable masterpiece.

Fallout 4

Fallout 4 is a critically acclaimed RPG from the same creators as The Elder Scrolls. In this game, players assume the role of a survivor of a nuclear apocalypse, who ventures out into a demolished Massachusetts region known as the ‘Commonwealth.’ Much of the praise this game has received is due to the fact that it has everything players expect from an RPG all executed in marvelous ways such as world depth, fantastic character development, player freedom, an amazing narrative that keeps you rooting for your hero from the beginning to the end. Of course, these features come alongside the stunning graphics, and its soundtrack that is just packed with top-notch music.
