Just because a game is free doesn’t mean it cannot allow for a pleasurable experience.
And the statement above cannot be any truer in 2020, which is arguably the biggest year for free-to-play online games on any platform. While it cannot be denied that paid games are still generally better in terms of quality, there’s a ton of free video games out there that can offer just as much– if not more– enjoyment. That being said, here’s a list of the best free online games you should be playing right now!
Platforms: Android, iOS, Microsoft Windows
Kickstarting the list is the murder-mystery masterpiece by indie game studio Innersloth that changed the way players view multiplayer gaming. 4 to 10 players enter a map where those who got the role of a Crewmate must finish a set of tasks to win. Those who got the role of Impostor must kill and ensure that no one finds out that he’s the Imp to achieve victory. The beating heart of the action lies within the nagging anticipation of being killed– all while being observant of other players’ movements so you know who’s suspicious (or sus) enough to vote out of the game.
Platforms: PC, PS4, Android, iOS
MiHoYo took the gaming world by storm when it launched the Breath of the Wild-inspired adventure game that many players would consider too good to be free. A vast open world filled with thrilling adventures, fun playable characters, astounding visuals, and an exceptional combat system await everyone who seeks to experience this modern masterpiece.
Platforms: iOS, Android
Popularly known as the mobile counterpart of the hit PC game League of Legends, Wild Rift is the newest MOBA craze that is fast gaining the gaming community’s attention. Many players who have spent their time trying their hands at other MOBAs are calling it the best mobile MOBA game today, and why not! Fantastic graphics, more dynamic and competitive gameplay than “the best MOBA ever”, and an overall smooth performance are just a handful of reasons why Wild Rift is a new force to be reckoned with.
From the creators of League of Legends comes another action-packed, free-to-play multiplayer that infuses the Counter Strike gameplay in an Overwatch-like world. It’s a character-based tactical shooter, and for your hero, you can choose from a wide selection of superpowered agents, each of them possessing a unique and interesting set of skills and attributes.
Call of Duty: Warzone
Platform: PC, PS4, Xbox One
This one’s basically Call of Duty in the form of a battle royale. Developed by Infinity Ward and Raven Software and published by Activision, Warzone takes players in an immersive, cross-platform shooting action set in the fictional town of Verdansk. Although it’s essentially a feature of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, you can play it for free on all supported platforms.
Platforms: PS4, PC, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
Another one of the biggest free-to-play titles today is Respawn Entertainment’s award-winning battle royale team shooter. 91% positive reviews from more than 36,000 steam users are just the tip of the iceberg. Major video game sites such as GameSpot, GamesRadar+, and PC Gamer have called it the best battle royale we have today. If it’s true that Apex Legends is the “next evolution of battle royale,” then the future of free-to-play online gaming looks really bright.
Platform: PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One, iOS, Android
This one’s a no-brainer. Epic Games was hitting the jackpot when it launched Fornite in September 2017. From a small battle royale struggling to make its name be remembered, the game has gone to being one of the most important pop culture happenings in the decade. While the Battle Royale mode is the gist of the entire Fortnite experience, for millions of people from all over the planet, it’s much more than a game.
Because it is much more than just a game at this point. In three years after it was introduced to the world, Fortnite has partnered up with brands, music artists and celebrities. It has hosted various in-game events, including a music concert attended by almost 11 million people. It has become a place of trailer debuts, and a virtual hangout for people.
Bombergrounds: Battle Royale
Platform: PC, iOS, Android
It was only a matter of time before the classic bombing gameplay got the battle royale treatment. Still, the anticipation of the obvious wouldn’t prevent you from getting all thrilled once you get your hands on Bombergrounds, a free-to-play massively multiplayer offering by Gigantic Duck Games. Just like the retro game Bomberman, players will be eliminating enemies by dropping bombs across a gridded battlefield while picking up powerups to help you win. However, much of the excitement comes from the fact that you are joined by 24 other players.
