With every spike and every block, volleyball has aced its way into the Pinoy heart! Have you ever wondered why we love collegiate women’s volleyball so much?

Volleyball has really been a favorite backyard or beach sport among Filipinos, but the UAAP Women’s Volleyball seems to have a special place in our hearts. Each year, we wait for the tournament like it’s water in a desert! We all have our own bets, and different teams never fail to amaze us each year! In this year’s season, the Ateneo Lady Eagles reclaimed the championship from UST Golden Tigresses.

This was a match I was able to watch during one long bus ride. Believe me when I say that it was intense! The game was like a tug-of-war between the two teams and it honestly had most of us in that bus on the edge of our seats waiting for the next turn of events. In the end, Ateneo won 3 sets straight and reclaimed the championship although UST did give them a hard time, and definitely a good fight.

Why we love the sport

When we play volleyball, we love it because it really doesn’t require much speed, instead, it relies more on the skills. Equipment-wise, all you need is the net, a ball, and the players! As long as the floor area is enough for the players to move around, we’re good to go! The game is so interactive and fun. There are also simple rules to the game, which comes as a pro when you watch tournaments.

This being said, it is not a surprise that the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) created a tournament between the eight major universities in Manila.

Why we love the players

I don’t know about you, but I think because of the team’s rivalry, the sport becomes more intense and with each score comes angst that you couldn’t see anywhere. You’d see females pumping their chests every time they take back leads. You’d hear shouts from the audience and the players themselves, and it just sets a mood for the game that is just unique to the women’s volleyball tournaments.

It may be that these people are younger, but these times, each sore is a matter of university pride! And when you’re rooting for a team, seeing them win or lose gives you some kind of feels like you’re there with them, because you’ve followed their journey throughout the entire tournament.

The UAAP women’s volleyball finals was surely intense! It made a lot of noise from social media, and we’ll surely be waiting for next season’s match!
