Are you feeling NPC-ish lately? We’ve got a film for you!

‘NPC’ started out as an abbreviation for Non-Player Characters, used to refer to background characters in a role-playing video game. Over time, people started using it as a derogatory term to describe someone who can’t think objectively, people who speak and act like their thoughts and actions were entirely controlled by external factors.

Every now and then, we become an NPC in certain situations– just an existing human being playing the supporting role to someone or something much bigger than us. However, many of us can be too self-aware that we realize we’ve become a background character in our very own lives. Just existing, not living. Just going with the flow, not against it. Do you relate to that feeling? It sucks, right?

‘Free Guy,’ a film about a literal NPC seeking meaning

20th Century Studios unleashes another trailer for the upcoming action-comedy starring Ryan Reynolds, ‘Free Guy.’ In the film directed by Shawn Levy, the Deadpool star plays the role of ‘Guy’ who is a background character in an open-world, GTA-style video game titled ‘Free City.’

One day, as he goes about his daily grind, which essentially revolves around waking up and witnessing explosions and freaky accidents on his way to work as a bank teller, Guy comes to a realization that will forever change the course of his computer-controlled existence: What if there’s something more?

Realizing he’s merely part of a video game, he decides to become the hero of his own story, rewriting was what already programmed of him to do.

“If we are not real, doesn’t that mean that nothing you do matters?”

While ‘Free Guy’ seems like another feel-good video game flick set to join Pixels, Wreck-It Ralph, and Jumanji, the new trailer hints that this film might be deeper than you think. Some lines spoken by Reynolds’ character reveal that the basic premise of an existent being recognizing he’s in a virtual world might be explored from a philosophical perspective. It could be more on the side of The Truman Show, but with more epic adventures and a slightly lighter tone.

In the trailer, Ryan Reynolds can be heard telling his virtual best friend, “If we are not real, doesn’t that mean that nothing you do matters?” To which the friend replies, “I am sitting here with my best friend trying to help him get through a tough time. Now if that’s not real, I don’t know what is.” Preaching about the value of human connections making up for life’s lack of inherent meaning is just one of the many indicators that we’re in for a hell of an emotional, existential ride with occasional Matrix-like action scenes. If ‘Free Guy’ is not the ultimate NPC film, I don’t know what is.

Starring Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar and Taika Waititi, ‘Free Guy‘ is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 11th.
