It can be exhausting to the point of numbness seeing how the world continually grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic. Fortunately, this latest offering by Ndemic Creations lets you do the global leaders one better.
The creators of Plague Inc– that viral mobile game that lets users destroy the world with a pandemic– have kept their word. Recently, they launched a new expansion for Plague Inc that allows players to simulate a global disease response, rather than create and spread a pandemic which is how the base game works.
In the original game, it’s you and your Pathogen against the world. You must drive humanity to extinction by evolving a global Plague and ruining every effort mankind comes up with to defend themselves.
In ‘The Cure,’ the story has been reversed: humanity relies on you to save them from the threats of a deadly disease. To succeed, you must send off research teams across the globe to find Patient Zero, monitor the spread of the outbreak, implement quarantine protocols such as contact tracing and community lockdowns, develop a vaccine, and most importantly, get people to cooperate. The last one can be done by making sure the economy is running smoothly and your policies are not manifestations of clownery. Otherwise, they won’t listen to you.
While the game doesn’t necessarily reflect reality and shouldn’t be mistaken for a “scientific model,” it does succeed in capturing the intricacies of handling a pandemic in real life. In fact, for this expansion, Ndemic Creations partnered up with Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness (CEPI), World Health Organisation (WHO) and Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN), so they can get expert inputs on how to make the simulation educational whilst being engaging.
“Plague Inc: The Cure is an engaging and timely simulation which lets players explore the issues that humanity faces when trying to stop a global pandemic,” said James Vaughan, the founder of Ndemic Creations.
“Games like Plague Inc: The Cure represent an incredibly important medium for education and public awareness that can be used to show the world the steps needed to address similar global health threats and their associated complexities,” added Richard Hatchett, the founder of CEPI.
According to Ndemic Creations, Plague Inc: The Cure is free for all Plague Inc players “until COVID-19 is under control.” You can download it from the App Store and Google Play.
