Minecraft’s Steve and Alex will be Coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

The cast of Minecraft led by Steve and Alex are the latest characters to join the expansive Super Smash Bros. universe.

Nintendo reveals that the characters from Mojang’s revolutionary sandbox game will be added to the current roster of playable heroes in Nintendo Switch’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Steve, Alex, Enderman, and Zombie all comprise the second character announcement made for Fighter Pass Vol. 2 DLC, following Min Min from Arms.

A video presentation on Thursday unveils a preview showing the Minecraft DLC in action. Players will be able to play as Steve, whose many abilities include shifting into Alex and the mobs, building blocks and weapons, throwing explosives, and flying.

Smash Bros.’ game director, Masahiro Sakurai shares that there’s more in store for players to find out during the company’s next presentation slated to happen this Saturday, October 3. At the upcoming event, Mojang’s blocky characters will be explored in terms of playstyle. The release date is also expected to be announced.

Sakurai reveals that adding Minecraft characters to the game was a “massive challenge” to the development team, as they had to “rework all our existing stages so that blocks can be placed in them.”

Steve and the gang are the second of six additional characters bound to come to Smash Bros. for the Fighter Pass Vol. 2. All the other four, along with new game updates, will have been launched by December 31, 2021.

Did this news get you screaming in blocks?

Well, even the team behind Minecraft is just as pumped up as we are– if not more. Mojang Studios details on a blog post the story of how their world and that of Smash Bros. Ultimate collided. “It all started when I found this weird, white envelope lying at the front door of Mojang Studios,” writes Per Landin, Mojang’s creative communications assistant. He then goes on about how their team couldn’t believe in this “surreal, yet magical milestone,” and how they were “busy screaming our lungs out in pure joy.”

At the end of the letter, he asks fans to stay tuned for Nintendo’s Saturday event, to be followed by Minecraft live on the same day at 8:30 AM PT / 11:30 AM ET / 5:30 PM CET.
