GAMES: Tour of BAYANI: Kanino Ka Kakampi?

There’s a new fighting game in town, people! Saddle up as we give you a tour of BAYANI: Kanino Ka Kakampi?.

We’ve been a fan of fighting games since we were kids. Arcades are our go-to every afternoon and we save coins just to play a bit of Capcom vs. Marvel, Tekken or Street Fighter. And even as adults, we’re suckers over fighting games every now and then. But we’ve just heard that there’s a new game making a buzz in the community. And if you haven’t heard of it, you better check out ‘BAYANI: Kanino Ka Kakampi?’.

‘BAYANI: Kanino Ka Kakampi?’ is the first Filipino commercial fighting game that is heavily inspired by Philippine history, culture, and mythology. However, the storyline, character and other elements of the game doesn’t depict the actual historical events. BAYANI is set in an alternate universe that is inspired by historical figures, events, and landmarks. The game developer of the game, Ranida Games and the mind behind it, is Arch. Anthony Dacayo II, took a futuristic take on BAYANI, adding futuristic elements but still maintaining the Philippine history references.

It started as a series of illustrations by ARTony (Arch. Anthony Dacayo II) until it went viral and got noticed by Ranida Games. Since 2016, they have been developing the game and it’s nearing its early release in 2019. Some may have played the game during its development stage and demos in game conventions in the country. And we are telling you, this is the game that screams “Filipino pride” in every single aspect!

The Characters

So far, they have released these official characters for the game. They are the counterparts of the most famous Filipino heroes like Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, and Antonio Luna. They’ve added twists to their backstory and their backstories are UH-MAZING! It has incorporated interesting elements to the original history that we know. They’ve even added quotes for every character! They do not only resonate their personality built by the creators but also the history we have.

The weapons are symbolic to their original background story and integrated a fresh twist to it. The character design, made by ARTony, developed over time, during the process of game development. If you’ve been following ARTony’s Facebook page, then you’ve probably seen the progress of his designs. It was totally cool to see it change up until the official game designs now.

We’ve seen the art of other non-playable characters like the crowd or spectators in every round and the referee for the game, Macapili. The spectators are inspired by common people in the community like a family, priests, guardia sibil, and rebels. But what caught our eyes are the designs for personas in the modern era of Philippines like a takatak boy, taho vendor, sarisari owner, and even a fixer. How cool is that right!

Early Access on 2019

And the good news is, Ranida Games just recently announce that they will be releasing an early access on the 1st quarter of 2019 on Steam. In the Early Release version, we can already expect 4-5 playable characters, 3 game modes, 4-5 stages, the fully animated game intro with their theme song, and original character soundtracks. They plan to polish the game as it progresses in the duration of the early release. And we can expect more characters and content to come!

We suggest that you add them now to your gaming list for this 2019. Not only you will enjoy playing an all-new fighting game but also get enticed by our own history. Yeah, we know, BAYANI does not provide accurate history but this is a great way to entice kids to learn more about Philippine history and culture.

So check out the trailer video of BAYANI and get hyped by the snippets of the game. The theme song is giving us goosebumps!
