“Welcome to Yara, a tropical paradise frozen in time.”

Following multiple leaks that spoiled fans about the existence of a new Far Cry game, Ubisoft has officially released the first cinematic trailer for Far Cry 6, the latest addition in the popular first-person shooter franchise, and the newest installment since 2018’s Far Cry 5. It will arrive on February 18th, 2021 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, Stadia, and PC (via the Epic Games Store and Ubisoft Store).

Some major details

“Welcome to Yara, a tropical paradise frozen in time,” says the game’s official pitch. “As the dictator of Yara, Anton Castillo is intent on restoring his nation back to its former glory by any means, with his son, Diego, following in his bloody footsteps. Their ruthless oppression has ignited a revolution.”

True to the leaks before the announcement, players get to play guerilla fighter Dani Rojas, who must take down dictator President Antón Castillo, the game’s main antagonist played by Breaking Bad’s Giancarlo Esposito. His son, Diego, played by Coco’s Anthony Gonzalez, is yet to be determined whether he’s a friend or a foe or someone in between.

Described by Ubisoft as its most ambitious open-world game to date, Far Cry 6 is set on a fictional, Cuba-inspired island called Yara and will feature jungles, beaches, and the capital city of Yara, Esperanza.

Although fans would debate if the last good Far Cry game was either 3 and 4, most of them would agree the next titles failed to live up to their predecessors– most especially New Dawn, the standalone expansion of Far Cry 5 which was a major flop upon release.

That being said, it looks like we’re in a good position to believe that Far Cry 6 will do some act of redemption, reminding us why we fell in love with the Far Cry title in the first place.
