As part of Facebook Gaming, Facebook introduces its own free-to-play cloud gaming service.
The social media giant is officially having a go at cloud gaming, launching on Monday its cloud gaming service. For the unversed, cloud gaming, sometimes referred to as gaming on demand, is a method of gaming by which players stream games on remote servers using their own device.
Facebook’s service, however, is no Google Stadia or Microsoft’s xCloud, nor is it an attempt to compete with these behemoths. Facebook’s cloud gaming, at least for now, is limited to free-to-play mobile games. Additionally, it’s not aiming to recreate the console experience. This is a point Facebook gaming wants everybody to understand.
“We believe in the long-term future of cloud gaming, but we aren’t going to try to wow you with the wonders of our data centers, compression algorithms, resolutions or frames per second,” said Jason Rubin, VP of Play for Facebook Gaming, in a statement. “Cloud game streaming for the masses still has a way to go, and it’s important to embrace both the advantages and the reality of the technology rather than try to sell you on a promise of where it’ll be in the future.”
Sad news, iOS users
Unfortunately, this service is only available on the web and on Android. Due to Apple’s app store terms and conditions that block cloud gaming services from operating on iOS devices, iPhone users won’t be able to try this offering.
For those who wanna get their hands on the free-to-play cloud games, they don’t need to use any hardware or controller. The titles available at the moment can be played on smartphones, and keyboard and mouse for PC users. For now, the lineup of available free-to-play games consists of Asphalt 9: Legends, Mobile Legends: Adventure, PGA TOUR Golf Shootout, Solitaire: Arthur’s Tale and WWE SuperCard.
