Japan’s Fuji Rock Festival 2018 just released their first lineup announcement! Get your passports ready.
Hip-Hop, Rock, Electronica
This year’s Fuji Rock lineup is taking a sharp turn into hip-hop. Regal genius Kendrick Lamar, supergroup N*E*R*D, and Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals are slated to perform at the three-day festival. Kung Fu Kenny will be making his second appearance at the festival, the first back in 2013 when he performed for for a packed crowd on the White Stage. Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo, and Shay Haley, collectively known as N*E*R*D, will be making their Fuji Rock debut alongside St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival 2018 performers Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals.
Staying true to Fuji Rock’s roots, the lineup of live bands is just as powerful; Vampire Weekend, MGMT, CHVRCHΞS, and Years & Years are just some of the bands set to play. 2018 marks Vampire Weekend’s third time at Fuji Rock, performing back in 2010 and 2013. MGMT follows with their second performance since 2010, similar to Years & Years who last appeared in 2016. The 2018 festival season marks the beginning of a new album cycle for Vampire Weekend, MGMT, and CHVRCHΞS; MGMT just released their fourth studio album entitled “Little Dark Age”, while Vampire Weekend’s “Mitsubishi Macchiato” and CHVRCHΞS’ “Love is Dead” will be out sometime within the year.
Attendees of this year’s Fuji Rock will also get a taste of electronic music thanks to producers Skrillex and ODESZA. It’s been four years since Skrillex came out with a full-length album, but he’s been going hard with collaborations. On the other hand ODESZA, composed of Harrison Mills and Clayton Knight, released their third studio album last September. “A Moment Apart” was nominated for Best Dance/Electronic Album at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards, and their single “Line of Sight” featuring WYNNE & Mansionair was nominated for Best Dance Recording.
