Collaborations in the sneaker game usually equate to tons of hype. Kanye and Adidas. Kaws and Jordan. The list goes on and on, but rarely do we see anything that drops that really resonates with us as a people–until now that is.

Local lifestyle brand Commonwealth has partnered with ASICS Tiger to bring us a shoe that represent the Philippines in the international sneakerhead scene. The release has the local movers and shakers excited.

The shoe’s design is based on off the Kalinga culture, which truly has survived the test of time. The geometric shapes the adorn the shoe are based on the Mambabatok tattoos, and when one talks about Mambabatoks one must talk about the national treasure that is Apong Whang-Od. Whang-Od has literally made a mark in the preservation of Kalinga culture. She’s been tattooing for 80 years now, and has since passed on the practice to her grandniece.

The shoe dubbed, Kultura GEL-Lyte V, hopes to pass on culture in a different way. In a world where the boundaries of art and street are blurred (to say the least), this is surely a step in the right direction.

The Kultura drops on the April 8 at all of Commonwealth’s branches. Check out Commonwealth’s official page to see how you can cop a pair tomorrow!
