Rice Lucido’s Endeavours

A student from De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, Rice Lucido is as artsy as they can get. She supported victims of Typhoon Yolanda in 2013 by playing in the Ginsiyaman Art and Music Festival and continued on to making her Fête de la Musique debut in 2015. Alongside her music, she’s also a multimedia artist and an advocate for the arts. One of her projects include Kwentuhan Sa Bahay ni Ninay, a music, arts, and dialogue circle session held in house at Big Horseshoe.

Kwentuhan Sa Bahay ni Ninay included performances from Coeli, Hannah + Gabi, and more. That even was also the first time I saw Bullet Dumas live and it was a whole new experience. He played his cover of Ang Bandang Shirley’s “Di Na Babalik” and THE TEARS WERE SO REAL, Y’ALL. Visual artists like Chissai Bautista, RJ Camacho, Hohana Flora Doamanais, and Art Enriquez displayed their pieces of different formats. We also curated a Paliwanag Session where participants were invited to speak of “taboo topics” in a judgement-free space.

“Pahina Uno”

Rice released “Pahina Uno” (“Page One” in English) last July 27 at Mow’s. The four-track EP consists of “Ulan”, “Dalawang Tao”, “Seventy-Sven”, and “Pebrero”. A firm believer of OPM, she sees the category as the way a Filipino tells his or her origin story whether it be in Filipino or English.

The sincerity in her songwriting coexists with her mellow vocals. “Pebrero” talks of someone very close to her; her best friend just ended a relationship with a guy who played her. Raw and unfiltered, the simplicity of the track takes us back to the moments when loneliness engulfed us. It reminds us that growth comes from situations like heartbreak and we always have the ability to learn and move forward.

Rice Lucido’s refreshingly soulful tunes proves that great music doesn’t always have to be complex. Big congratulations to your EP launch and we’ll see you on the 19th!
