The 2018 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival have released their lineup! The Weeknd, Beyoncé, and Eminem are set to headline the three-day, two-weekend long festival that will run from April 13th through 15th, and April 20th through 22nd in Indio, California.
Not An Easy Job
Paul Tollett’s concert promotion company Goldenvoice struggled with business against larger companies. While attending Glastonbury Festival in 1997, he pitched the idea of a sunny music festival in California in contrast to Glastonbury’s muddy domain and everyone simply laughed at him. Tollett and Goldenvoice co-president Rick Van Santen set up the inaugural Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in 1999 just a few months after the violent four-day Woodstock festival. Beck, the Chemical Brothers, Tool, Morrissey, and Rage Against the Machine headlined the October festival and despite the fact that Tollett and Van Santen wanted to recreate the European aura of music festivals, they fell short with their expected audience total.
Even if attendees and critics praised how smoothly the festival went, Goldenvoice lost USD850,000 on the undertaking and forced the company to go into survival mode for the next two years. Coachella came back in 2001 and they once again fell short, but it wasn’t as bad as their first rodeo. They eventually and finally broke even a couple years later thanks to grabbing headliners like Oasis, the reunification of Pixies, and Beastie Boys. Other notable acts during the festival’s history includes Paul McCartney, Phoenix, and of course the hologram of Tupac Shakur performing “Hail Mary” and “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted”.
The 2018 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival will also feature SZA, Haim, Vince Staples, Cardi B, alt-J, King Krule, Post Malone, Jamiroquai, and more. Queen B’s headlining slot comes a year after she backed out of the festival due to her pregnancy with twins, while this will be Eminem’s first full Coachella performance. Passes and camping packages go on sale January 6, 4:00AM local time. Catch the full lineup and more information on their official website!
