Cebu celebrated the long-awaited Sinulog Festival with a lineup of international DJs and some of the Philippine music scene’s shining stars. AfterParty spent the third weekend of January in the Queen City of the South to bring you our Sinulog Weekend 2018 Special!
To kick off the weekend, the crowds gathered in Mandaue City for the annual LifeDance music festival. Armed with eight local DJs and four international acts, the music blasting started as early as 6:00 PM courtesy of AMZ. The event’s outdoor setting and crying skies provided a muddy landscape but that didn’t stop the festival goers from moving up to barrier. Philippine talents took over the 1s and 2s next–TIME resident DJ Sky Dominique, proud Cebuano tandem Victor Jao and Renzo, Manila’s trap king MVRXX, John Sedano of The Block PH, high performance DJ Patty Tiu of DEUCE, and one-half of Motherbass’ Nix Damn P! showed off their precision, skill, and flavor to the electric dance congregation.
As the clock ticked closer to midnight, Belgian DJ Coone greeted the packed crowd from behind the decks. He shared some heartfelt sentiments about his daughter and shared a track that elevated the energy to the next level. FEHRPLAY kept the beats pumping with material from his newest EP “Feelin”, followed by Russian protege Arty who made his third appearance in the Philippines following two stints at Exception Music Festival in 2013 and a headlining gig at Universe Gastrolounge. Dutch duo Yellow Claw, the night’s headlining artist, rolled the fatigue off the audience’s shoulders (and presumably legs!) with their eclectic blend of trap, hardstyle, and dubstep that got everyone back up on their feet to dance a grab a glass of Bacardi! Rounding up the early morning was none other than the #bestinthebusiness, DJ Ace Ramos, who got us all prepped for an early breakfast.
Plus63 Music and Arts Festival
The organizers behind the Plus63 Music and Arts Festival only had one common vision: to create a destination for international acts. Previous installments of Plus63 featured Swedish House Mafia’s Steve Angello and Steve Aoki, performing alongside some of the Philippines’ hottest DJs. For their third year they brought Wouter and Sjoerd Jansse–collectively known as Showtek–to celebrate the festivities of Sinulog 2018! Opening the evening was DJ Gino V., one of Cebu’s bests, who got the shy bystanders to loosen up a little and come closer. Up next, our very own DJs X-Factor, Marc Marasigan, and MC Victor Pring added a hint of nostalgia to their set with old EDM and OPM tunes mixed with the latest bangers to produce a crowd who readily sang along to nearly every track. As Wouter grabbed the mic and Sjoerd hit the decks, those in the VVIP stand quickly rushed down to catch Showtek. The brothers just performed at Cove Manila the night before but they looked fresher than ever. Their adrenaline-packed gig got the crowd to chant “Showtek! Showtek!” to show love, support, and appreciation for the creativity the Dutch DJ veterans have shown over the years.
Beats of Sinulog
The mark of a remarkable artist is their ability to create their desired atmosphere in the strangest of venues. DJs X-Factor, Marc Marasigan, and MC Victor Pring proved the worth in their names once again when they brought the party inside SM City Cebu for Beats of Sinulog 2018. Unlike their usual setup, our artists were only equipped with a stage with enough movement for three or four steps. Shoppers who initially only wanted to pass by couldn’t help but join those who squeezed their way to the front of the platform. Everyone joined in the jumping, dancing, and screaming that made The Northwing Atrium of SM City Cebu shake. Beats of Sinulog turned from a mall show to a party all thanks to our hardworking and passionate artists.
The beginning of a new week brought us back to reality, and by reality we mean Manila, safely thanks to AirAsia. As we tread along the rest of 2018, we’re stirring up our plans for next year’s festivities. Viva Pit Senyor! #AirAsiaInCebu #ChasingWonders #AirAsiaInSinulog
