Miss Universe 2019 went down with a bang after Catriona Gray mispronounces “karangalan” in her farewell speech. Find out more here:
Ahh, the Miss Universe—a once in a year event full of glitz and glamour. But most of all, it’s a night for ladies to showcase both their inner and outer beauty. Everyone is expected to be on their best selves and project nothing but grace. But sometimes mistakes happen and Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray isn’t an exception to that.
Social media users were quick to spot Catriona Gray’s mistake in saying of the word “karangalan” during her farewell speech as Miss Universe 2018 during the coronation event in Atlanta, Georgia in the United States on Monday, December 9.
As she was having her last walk as Miss Universe, her heartfelt speech was played in the background before formally turning over the crown to the new Miss Universe, Miss South Africa Zozibini Tunzi. She goes on to say, “And to my beloved Philippines, isang ‘karalangan’ (instead of karangalan) po ito.”
But from what it looks like, Catriona’s voice-over was pre-recorded. Uh-oh, someone didn’t double-check. Hey, at least we Filipinos, would always remember her as our Miss Universe because of this hilarious incident.

Here’s the full transcript of her farewell speech:
“I’ve always believe that as women, we have the power to redefine our generation. When we raise our voices together, the words “women power” become more than just a phrase – they become a movement. I wanted my reign to be a year with purpose. From advocating for quality education for all to raising awareness for HIV/AIDs, I’ve strived to use my voice for good.
Thank you to mom and dad for always believing in me, to Paula and Esther for your mentorship, the Miss Universe organization, and to team Catriona, thank you from the bottom of my heart. And to my beloved Philippines, isang [karangalan] po ito. You endlessly inspire me and give me hope. Maraming salamat sa inyong lahat. Above all, thank you God. I lift everything up to glorify and honor you.
As I close this chapter, I do so with a grateful heart. To everyone with a dream, know that your dreams are valid, and on your path you are never denied, and only redirected.”
What would Miss Universe be without a little drama? Remember THAT incident in 2016? Yeah, right? Well, Catriona Gray just showed us that even beauty queens make mistakes and it’s just normal. As of now, Catriona has still no comment about the issue but we’re pretty sure she would handle it very gracefully.
