No one would have foreseen that a miniseries about what some would jokingly describe as the most boring sport would invite a massive amount of viewers. More than 65M accounts have viewed it, to give you an idea. The Queen’s Gambit, a Netflix show about an orphan-turned-chess prodigy, proved to be an absolute game-changer when it dominated the streaming platform, rising to become the most popular limited series, and then went on to win Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and AACTA awards.

No one would have also expected that after reaching critical and commercial success, the next move would be… turning it into a musical.

We’re not kidding: The Queen’s Gambit is about to become a stage musical. This information was made known to the public after an entertainment company called ‘Level Forward’ acquired stage rights to the 1983 Walter Tevis novel from which the hit series was adapted. Given the fact that this project is still in early development, major details such as the creative team handling it and the premiere date have yet to be revealed. However, the mere idea of chess-centered musical period drama is already exciting enough, albeit intriguing. Does it mean we’ll get to see Beth Harmon singing and dancing with life-size chess pieces in her drug and alcohol-fueled episodes?

The Queen’s Gambit follows the Cold War-set, zero-to-hero story of Beth Harmon as she started out as a young orphan and conquered her way to becoming a chess phenom– all the while dealing with alcohol and drug addiction. The character is played by Anya-Taylor Joy, who won a Golden Globe award for Best Actress in a Miniseries or Television Film.
