A recap of what a shitshow the previous year was is the last thing we all need. We wanna move on already, for God’s sake, not relive the trauma. Yet, the world’s leading streaming service thought it would be a good idea to take us on a ride back to 2020.
Together with Black Mirror creators Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones, Netflix released ‘Death to 2020,’ a comedy event summarizing the most significant and depressing events at the forefront of what was arguably the worst year ever. It’s a star-studded documentary joined by A-list Hollywood celebrities who portray various fictional personalities, from science experts, to a billionaire CEO, to average citizens, giving their own take on the events of the last 12 months.
To name a few, there’s Dash Bracket, a reporter for the New Yorkerly News played by Samuel L. Jackson; Tennyson Foss, a historian played by Hugh Grant; Jeanetta Grace Susan, a non-official conservative spokesperson played by Friends’ Lisa Kudrow; and Dr. Maggie Gravel, a behavioral psychologist played by Leslie Jones.
The film was executed in a mockumentary style, which combines true and false, satirical information. Events tackled in it include the Australian bushfires, the global COVID-19 pandemic, the US election, the killing of George Floyd and the protests that ensued, among many others.
Here are some of the most hilarious (sometimes depressing) quotes in ‘Death to 2020.’
“They had Greta Thunberg headlining. She’s this teenage girl who’d become famous even though everything she says is depressing. Kind of like Billie Eilish.” -Dash Bracket
“In a desperate bid for attention, the virus infects beloved Hollywood everyman, and occasional CGI cowboy, Tom Hanks, providing new networks with an irresistible celebrity angle to the otherwise boring deadly pandemic.” -Narrator, voiced by Laurence Fishburne
“Don’t people call you selfish?” -Director
“I don’t know. It’s soundproof.” -Bark Multiverse, CEO of a fictional technological company named Shreekr, played by Kumail Nanjiani
“They said there were more mail ballots than ever, what about female ballots?” -Kathy Flowers, a stereotypical Karen portrayed by Cristin Milioti, who is labeled in the film as “a self-described soccer mom”
“There is no such place as Ukraine.” -Jeanetta Grace Susan
“Across the USA, masks, which unlike guns, cannot be cheaply and easily manufactured, run low while critics describe the lack of ventilators as “breathtaking.” -Narrator
“I f*cking hate the virus. But at least it doesn’t pretend it’s here to help. It doesn’t drive around the neighborhood with ‘Protect and Serve’ painted on its side before it kills you.” -Dash Bracket
