Netflix is making us relive our childhood, while also reminding us how far we’ve come from those golden days.
The streaming service is working with Robert Rodriguez for a new superhero film called ‘We Can Be Heroes,’ which will see the return of iconic characters Sharkboy and Lavagirl.
Respectively played by Taylor Lautner and Taylor Dooley, Sharkboy and Lavagirl are the titular characters in ‘The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl.’ In their resurgence in what may or may not be a direct sequel to the original film, their adventure will be much different as it will now involve parenthood.
Yep, they’re parents in the Netflix continuation of Rodriguez’s 2005 kids’ film that became a cult-favorite among the ’90s and 2000s kids. While the pair is still superheroes this time, it’s not them who’ll be saving the day. The mission to save the world now falls on their super-powered kids, who get tasked to find them after they’ve mysteriously vanished. Real ’90s kids would notice how this plot is strikingly similar to that of Spy Kids– another iconic work of Rodriguez.
Wanna feel old? Sharkboy and Lavagirl are parents now (and their daughter is played by Vivien Lyra Blair aka Girl from BIRD BOX)

We’re pretty sure that one of the first questions that popped in your head is whether or not the original actors will reprise their roles. Taylor Dooley is confirmed to have been back as the adult Lavagirl. First-look photos posted by Netflix see the now 27-year-old actress in her Lavagirl suit. Unfortunately, Taylor Lautner is nowhere to be seen. While the grown-up Sharkboy is wearing a mask that covers most of his head, we can clearly see that it’s not our man. Instead, the actor behind the mask is J.J. Dashnaw.
Well, that’s a bummer.
‘We Can Be Heroes’ is set for a global premiere on January 1, 2021, on Netflix.
