Netflix hopes to build the next action movie franchise with ‘The Gray Man’, commits largest budget so far for the Russo Brothers’ next venture
After setting the all-time global box office record with Avengers: Endgame, the Russos will be directing ‘The Gray Man’, an espionage film, and quite possibly a franchise, that will star Ryan Gosling alongside Chris Evans.
This is Netflix’s most ambitious feature film to date, and they are breaking the bank, with a budget amounting to more than $200 million.
The film will be produced by Russo Brothers’ AGBO, and the script was written by Joe Russo, with a polish by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. It is based on the 2009 Mark Greaney novel with the same name.
Captain America: Winter Soldier without the Superheroes
The espionage thriller is a duel to the death between fellow killers as freelance assassin Gentry (Gosling) is hunted around the globe by Lloyd Hansen (Evans), a former colleague of the former at the CIA. The Gray Man turned into a series about the assassin-for-hire. A legend in the world of killers, as he tends to suddenly disappear after completing seemingly impossible jobs. With this, the expectation is Gosling will continue in multiple installments.
“The movie is a real mano a mano between those two great actors who represent two different versions of the CIA, in what it can be, and what it can do. For those who were fans of Captain America: Winter Soldier, this is us moving into that territory in more of a real-world setting. That’s what this movie really means for us.”
This movie (or franchise) is solid proof that digital streaming is taking on the big screen. Netflix has always been innovative but the scale of this project will take it to the next level.
The Russo Brothers have shown that they are a very ambitious filmmakers, and Netflix is no different. That’s why this partnership makes sense, and with this film potentially spawning another universe, Netflix would know that it would be in good hands.
“The intention is for it to be competitive with any theatrical, and the ability to do it with Gosling and Evans is a dream for us. The idea is to create a franchise and build out a whole universe, with Ryan at the center of it. We have all committed to the first movie, and that’s got to be great to get us to the second movie.”
While a release has not been set yet, production is expected to begin in January 2021.
