Another ugly by-product of the global pandemic.
Netflix announced the unfortunate cancellation of its YA shows, ‘The Society’ and ‘I’m Not Okay with This’. The streaming service announced last Friday morning the cancellation of renewal for both shows. This comes almost a year after the announcement of The Society’s renewal for a second season.
Representatives from the streaming service spoke to The Hollywood reporters and stated that the cancellations were largely attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the statement, the source imparts, “We’re disappointed to have to make these decisions due to circumstances created by COVID, and we are grateful to these creators.” According to the same sources as well, budget increases, scheduling challenges, and the general uncertainty clouding this whole pandemic highly impacted the drastic moves.
The Cast Reacts
The Society co-stars, Kathryn Newton and Gideon Adlon, took to Instagram live to offer their thanks to fans who have been actively trending #SaveTheSociety on Twitter the morning of the announcement.
Kathryn spills, “Everything was written. I can’t believe it.” pertaining to the script having been completed for the supposedly upcoming season. The pair shares that this came as an all the more shock to them not only because filming was supposed to start in two weeks, but also because they too first found out over the news.
I’m Not Okay with This lead, Sophia Lillis, also posted about the cancellation on her official Instagram, recounting the wonderful memories she made with fellow cast members and crew.
Lillis shares, “We had a good run! I sincerely hope we can work together again one day.” a message to her co-stars on the highly successful show.
Sadly, this probably won’t be the last we’ve heard of cancellations over production problems due to the COVID-19 pandemic still wreaking havoc across all countries. The best we can hope to do is keep streaming our favorite shows in the hopes that producers will see the value they carry, especially in quelling our weary hearts in lockdown.
