Attention, comic buffs: Netflix has finally found their Alexandra Trese, and let’s just say that our favorite occult detective is in very good hands.
The streaming giant revealed in 2018 its plans to create an original anime series based on the horror/supernatural graphic novel Trese. A brainchild of writer Budjette Tan and illustrator Kajo Baldisimo, ‘Trese’ follows the story of detective Alexandra Trese, who deals with the crimes of malevolent supernatural beings. The story takes place mainly in Manila, where the mythical creatures of Philippine folklore live in hiding amongst the people.
Fans of the award-winning komiks series would be delighted to know that Netflix is keeping its word. As a matter of fact, it just announced today, March 8, that it has already found the persons lending their voice to the iconic Alexandra Trese. Filipino actress Liza Soberano (My Ex and Whys, Alone/Together) will voice Alexandra Trese in the Filipino language version of the series. Meanwhile, Filipino-Canadian actress Shay Mitchell– best known as Emily Fields in the drama series Pretty Little Liars– will voice the lead character in the English version.
“It’s an honor to be the voice of an iconic character such as Alexandra Trese,” says Liza Soberano in a press release. “I’m a huge fan of Budjette and KaJO’s award-winning Trese comics. Maraming salamat! Excited na ako!”
‘Trese’ is executive produced by Jay Oliva (Wonder Woman, The Legend of Korra), who is as excited to work with the actresses as we are to watching them once the anime arrives on the streaming platform this 2021. Speaking about the lead cast, the American filmmaker said, “As a fan of the komiks, I knew that the title role of Alexandra Trese was going to be challenging to cast for the animated series. It is important for the voice talent to embrace the layered character to fully become Alexandra Trese. My concerns went away as soon as Shay Mitchell stepped into the recording booth.”
“Shay’s Alexandra exceeded my expectations and she delivers a performance of strength, determination and family duty that is at the very core of the character. If that wasn’t enough, imagine my delight when we confirmed Liza Soberano joining the Filipino voice cast! I am a big fan of hers and she fits the character so well. Having Liza play Alexandra Trese for the series makes this project even more special to me and my team!”
Shay Mitchell, who also stars in Netflix’s buzzed-about psychological thriller, You, shares the same thoughts. “I’m so excited to be a part of a unique and amazing project like Trese, and to voice a character as brilliant as Alexandra Trese. Philippine folklore is rich and fascinating, and I am thrilled to be a part of the team bringing this story to life.”
