When the world lost a beautiful soul in the form of Chadwick Boseman in 2020, many feared for the future of the Black Panther franchise. As the titular star, part of the fans’ grief was the question of who would be there to replace the irreplaceable.
Disney shares the same sentiment. The company previously said that T’Challa will not be recast and the sequels will instead put the highlight on other characters in Wakanda. In fact, there are speculations that it’s Letitia Wright, the actress who plays T’Challa’s sister, Shuri, who will take over as the new Black Panther.
News flash: aside from the highly anticipated Black Panther sequel and other projects Marvel has in store for us, a Wakanda spinoff show is also in the works!
According to The Wrap, a television series based on the Oscar-winning box office hit is in development at Disney+, and spearheading the project is the film’s writer and director himself, Ryan Coogler. While it is still unannounced which character will be the focus of the show (or if there’ll be a new one introduced), the spinoff series will be set in the Kingdom of Wakanda, a fictional country located in sub-Saharan Africa.
The series will be part of Ryan Coogler’s five year deal between his Proximity Media company and Disney, so we can expect that this is merely the beginning. In a statement, Coogler said, “It’s an honor to be partnering with The Walt Disney Company. Working with them on Black Panther was a dream come true. As avid consumers of television, we couldn’t be happier to be launching our television business with Bob Iger, Dana Walden and all the amazing studios under the Disney umbrella.”
The Black Panther tie-in show would be the 12th Marvel show being made at Disney. Once done, it will follow “WandaVision,” which is currently streaming on the platform now and “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” which will launch on March 19, 2021.
