Oscar-winning Joaquin Phoenix will be portraying Napoleon Bonaparte in “Kitbag,” a historical drama by Ridley Scott.

The Joker lead star is set to give life to the 19th-century French military leader and emperor in the upcoming biopic that will center on Napoleon’s life– from his origins to his difficult relationship with his wife, Josephine.

According to Deadline, the film title is based on the saying, “There is a general’s staff hidden in every soldier’s kitbag.” They also report that the movie aims to capture Napoleon’s rise to power and the ambitious and strategic mind that made him a historical military figure.

‘Kitbag’ marks the second time Scott and Phoenix will be teaming up for a historical drama, the first one being Gladiator in 2000. It’s currently in its initial stages of development at the Disney-owned 20th Century Studios. It’s directed by Ridley Scott, whose name is associated with classic titles like Alien (1979), The Blade Runner (1982), and Prometheus (2012).

Phoenix is this year’s best actor for the Academy Awards after his stunning performance in “Joker” as the titular villainous character.
