September 22 is Hobbit Day!

Nope, we didn’t invent that. It’s actually a calendar date dedicated to celebrating the birthday of the hobbits Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, who are two of the most iconic characters in the epic fantasy genre in both literature and film. The American Tolkien Society first came up with Hobbit Day in 1978, and since then, many Tolkien fans have celebrated September 22 by throwing parties with feasts that resemble how the hobbits do it in Middle-earth. Even schools and libraries take part in the celebration, holding events and putting up displays to get the students to appreciate the Hobbit’s universe.

To shoot up our love for Tolkien’s legendarium, let’s take a look back at some of the most inspiring and memorable quotes from The Hobbit series.

Quotes from gandalf hobbit

“IT IS THE SMALL THINGS, EVERYDAY DEEDS OF ORDINARY FOLK THAT KEEPS THE DARKNESS AT BAY. SIMPLE ACTS OF LOVE AND KINDNESS.”

This was said by Gandalf, the old and wise wizard. Given that he graced Middle-earth for over 2000 years, he certainly should be the go-to man when it comes to life advice and wisdom. This particular quote is considered to be one of the most inspiring things he’s said in the movies because it’s true and has never been any timelier: life should not have to be about achieving power anymore. Changing the world for the better starts with a simple choice of whether or not an individual will act on love and kindness.

“THE WORLD IS NOT IN YOUR BOOKS AND MAPS. IT IS OUT THERE.”

While this quote is not from the books, it perfectly encapsulates the soul of the film trilogy. This was said by Gandalf to Bilbo who was, at first, adamant in his decision not to leave his simple hobbit life in pursuit of an adventure of a lifetime. Needless to say, the advice worked for Baggins.

“TRUE COURAGE IS NOT KNOWING HOW TO TAKE A LIFE, BUT WHEN TO SPARE IT.”

This great advice from Gandalf is what pushed Bilbo to spare Gollum’s life, even though he, Bilbo, had every reason not to.  It also represents Tolkien’s views about death being an unfair punishment for someone, as it completely robs the person of the chance to learn and be better. After all, where there’s life, there’s hope.

“SORRY, I DON’T WANT ANY ADVENTURES, THANK YOU. NOT TODAY. GOOD MORNING!”

Does this quote remind you of someone else? Is that “someone else” you? Well, we’ve all been there– in the position where we feel safe and sound and the idea of attempting to make big changes sounds like a recipe for disaster. In our own addiction to comfort, we fail to realize that beyond our safe little spaces, a whole new world filled with adventures awaits.

“I’M GOING ON AN ADVENTURE!”

Simple and short as this line is, it marks the turning point of Bilbo Biggins’ life in the first Hobbit film. From a hesitant, playing-safe hobbit, he finally allows himself to surrender to his curiosity and joins the dwarves in the adventure. The result? An Unexpected Journey that changes the rest of his life forever.
