Gundam Live-Action Film In The Works At Netflix

Netflix announced on Monday that it’s developing a live-action feature film based on Sunrise’s mega-popular anime series, Gundam.

Created by Yoshiyuki Tomino and animation studio Sunrise in 1979, the Gundam multimedia franchise started off with the series Mobile Suit Gundam, whose story revolves around the war between the Principality of Zeon and the Earth Federation. The events are set in a futuristic fictional universe called ‘Universal Century, during a time when the earth could no longer provide for the overpopulated humanity, driving people to live in space colonies.

Over the years, the series has become a global phenomenon and has spawned tons of animated series, films, mangas, novels, and even video games. It is also widely praised for revolutionizing the giant robot genre.

Netflix has partnered up with Legendary Pictures for the development of the project. This is a good team-up, considering that Legendary is also behind other giant-themed films such as the Pacific Rim movies and the Monsterverse, which recently unleased Godzilla vs. Kong, its biggest work to date.
