“Godzilla vs. Kong” just became as enormous as its titular monsters, box office-wise.

What do you get when two of the most iconic monsters of pop culture decided to settle, once and for all, who’s the most powerful one? The biggest battle of the century!

Warner Bros. proudly announced on Saturday that its wildly anticipated new Godzilla film is now the most commercially successful film during the pandemic. A sequel to 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters and 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla vs. Kong has amassed a total of $69.5 million in its second weekend of release, besting the likes of “Tenet” and “Wonder Woman 1984” which premiered in 2020.

Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi action-thriller previously held the record as the top-grossing film since March 2020– a.k.a the start of the pandemic era– with a gross amounting to $58.4 million.

For ‘Godzilla vs. Kong,’ this is an impressive feat considering that the film was released amidst the ongoing global pandemic, both in theaters and on HBO Max, at a time when theaters can still only operate at a limited capacity.

‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ is the fourth film in Legendary’s Monsterverse, and sees the two titular titans waging a war against one another. Its star-studded cast includes Millie Bobbie Brown, Alexander Skarsgard, Rebecca Hall, and Kyle Chandler. The film premiered on March 26 and can be streamed exclusively on HBO Max.
