Meet Drake Campana, formerly known as Drake Bell.
Singer and actor Drake Bell first came to the limelight when he starred as half of the iconic titular characters in Drake and Josh, a comedy sitcom that ran on Nickelodeon from 2004 to 2007. He is considered as one of the network’s homegrown household names alongside Miranda Cosgrove, Nat and Alex Wolff, Devon Werkheiser, and Keke Palmer, among many others. (Many of you might have first met him when he gave Tom Cruise the middle finger in Jerry Maguire in 1996.)
Aside from acting, Bell is also a music artist in his own right. Since 2005, he has had released a total of 5 albums.

Because it’s 2020– where the most peculiar things have happened– Drake Bell has been getting attention for what many fans would describe as a big and mysterious career move. Apparently, the former Nick star has moved to Mexico, changed his surname to Campana, and is making music written in Spanish.
Although his social media handles still display @DrakeBell, his name now reads Drake Campana with a Mexican flag beside it. In case you were wondering, Campana is the Spanish translation for Bell.
Why the change?
As Drake Campana has yet to give comments regarding the change of name, fans have been coming up with their theories regarding the singer’s reinvention.

Since last year, Drake Campana’s music has been in Spanish. His posts on his social media accounts are also written in Spanish. Fans are reasoning that this is Campana deciding to go where the support is, considering that his last album in the US reportedly sold 2,000 copies in its first week, whereas his Spanish music has been yielding much better results. His most streamed song on Spotify is Fuego Lento, with over 23 million listeners as of this writing.
Although it’s not yet confirmed if Drake Bell has legally changed his name to Campana and moved to Latin America for good, fans have very good reasons to believe so, as he’s previously posted memes expressing how he prefers Mexico over his homeland.

Another speculation is that Drake Bell could have decided to move away after the abuse allegations from his ex-girlfriend broke out. In August 2020, Melissa Lingafelt announced via TikTok that Bell had verbally and physically abused her– an accusation that the latter denied. “I never abused my ex-girlfriend or did so many of the other things Melissa falsely claimed on her TikTok video,” Bell told People.
Drake Bell really got exposed as an abuser then packed it up and fled to Mexico and started a music career over there and only posts in Spanish now. What in the Lifetime?

Whatever Bell’s motivations may be, one thing is clear: people are confused. As expected, the shocking news about Bell turning into a Latin-American pop star spawned memes and hilarious responses from the Twitter audience.
