Traditionally speaking, little girls always look to their moms when they need help with their hair. But what happens when mom isn’t around to help you? ‘Hair Love’ is a short film about a little girl who has naturally kinky hair. And for a little girl, taming hair like that is a big ask. So watch how a father-daughter relationship is strengthened by hair in ‘Hair Love’:
‘Hair Love’ by Matthew A. Cherry
So if you’re wondering why ‘Hair Love’ seems familiar, that’s because it’s also a New York Times Best-Selling Children’s Picture Book. Not to mention that it was also premiered right before the movie ‘Angry Birds 2’.
And to make ‘Hair Love’ even more endearing, did you know that its creator, Matthew A. Cherry used to be an NFL wide receiver for the Jacksonville Jaguars? So not only is ‘Hair Love’ aww-worthy, it also challenges the norm that dads can’t do hair. But we shouldn’t be that surprised at the representation for both progressive gender roles and African-American life in the short film. Because it was ‘Spiderverse’ director Peter Ramsey who executively produced ‘Hair Love’.
Overall, ‘Hair Love’ is a must-watch in our book! And even if most Filipinos can’t relate to the struggles of having kinky hair, we can all learn a thing or two from Zuri for not giving up. And as her mom said:
“The road ahead might look rough, but you can make the journey with a little bit of work and a whole lot of love!”
