A female Thor wielding the Mjolnir? Totally badass! Let’s unpack everything we know so far about Thor: Love and Thunder casting a female Thor!
A female actress to wield the Mjolnir and Thor’s powers was the last thing we expected. But it might not be the last thing we want! ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ features a female Thor in the persona of Natalie Portman’s character, Jane Foster, and we couldn’t be any more excited!
Director Taika Waititi returns to the direct and to write the 4th Thor film! And thank the Norse Gods for that, because Chris Hemsworth’s contract ended right after Avengers: Endgame and this script brought him back to play the Mighty Norse God for the ninth time, thanks to Waititi. After helming Thor’s character solid in ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ (which is still the funniest one out of all Thor films, if you ask us), it seemed quite fitting that he returns to direct this sequel which is playfully titled ‘Thor: Love and Thunder.
Waititi was also the visionary behind Natalie Portman playing Lady Thor According to the director, he could really only think of one person fit to play the role.
It makes sense if you think about it.
Natalie will not be playing Thor, as in the very character. It came to mind, too, but no. This isn’t the Ghostbusters! And we’re not about to ruin Marvel’s cinematic universe by spinning off a perfectly good character and casting a girl to do it. We love you, girls, but we don’t think it’s the way to go! The story, however, follows the story at a point where Thor is no longer worthy of wielding the Mjolnir, leaving the Asgardians vulnerable. And so, a new ruler would need to prove himself– or herself, in this case– worthy of the wielding Thor’s signature magical hammer. And this new Thor happens to be none other than Jane Foster. Comic book writer Jason Aaron implied this in his book The Goddess of Thunder, which focused on the new mystery Thor.
We all know that Jane is a mortal. Her character is even underutilized in the first Thor movies! So we don’t know much about her. She just disappeared altogether in Thor: Ragnarok, where it was implied that she and Thor broke up off-screen. It’s a great play on the usual theme where when a hero finds the love of his life, he stays with her for good. Not this time, but how exciting would it be to have the two characters reunite in the 4th Thor installment!
It can also be remembered that by the ending of Avengers: Endgame, Thor had entrusted the kingship of Asgardia to Valkyrie.
In connection to Valkyrie…
Tessa Thompson openly announced at Marvel’s Comic-Con what she would do in the next Thor movie after being crowned the King of Asgardia. To this, she answered that as a king, she would need to find herself a queen and that it’s the first course of action. That’s the first hint possibly connecting us to Jane Foster! Also, Valkyrie is an openly bisexual character in the comic books, but the only scene indicating her as such was cut from Thor: Ragnarok. It’s a bummer, of course, but a girl walking out of her bedroom distracts the audiences from the scene’s exposition. And that, my friends, is our second clue.
We’re not saying Jane would be Valkyrie’s love interest. After all, we can never be sure unless we see the film. We’re just saying that Valkyrie miiight have a thing for both Thor and Jane in the film. It’s either that or Jane winds up with Thor again!
Should the first scenario prevails, Valkyrie will be Marvel’s first openly bisexual character! After all, Marvel’s already hinted at introducing some LGBTQ characters and according to them, some would be new and some would be familiar to us!
