Given the Oscars long history, this honor has been rarely given to foreign language films. But the dark comedy film swept everyone on their feet and secured an early win by beating out all challengers for Best Original Screenplay. On a side note, it also became the first South Korean film to win this award.

Best International Feature Film

From its newly changed honor, the Best International Feature Film was given to ‘Parasite‘ making it another big win for them being the first South Korean film to attain this. Previously, it was named as Best Foreign Language Film but inclusivity in the global film scene was the driving force behind this change which Director Bong has also acknowledged in his speech.

Capping off the night, ‘Parasite’ also bagged the top recognition for the ceremony as not only the first South Korean film to win Best Picture, but the first non-English language film of any kind to win that award, beating top contenders like ‘1917’ and ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’. Throughout time, only 11 foreign language films have ever been nominated in the category.

A thought to ponder

This widely acclaimed film has been dominating the movie industry, claiming over 150 awards. In the process, it has also been paving the way for future stories Asian filmmakers have to tell. Ultimately, ‘Parasite’ proves that these masterpieces from our end deserves a spotlight in the mainstream that are fully raw. What we hope is for more people to recognize the potential foreign language films have to offer and clearly not another Western adaptation.

“Once you overcome the one inch-tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.” -Bong Joon-ho
