A classic is again being remade. We now have our first look into the film adaptation for the musical ‘Cats’ together with Taylor Swift!
‘Cats’ stands as one of the longest-running musicals on both West Side and Broadway, and it has been popular for decades now! The world first laid eyes on it in 1981, and it had never stopped its roll since then! Hands down, this musical might be the reason most of the people who went into doing theatre made that decision. Needless to say, it’s a classic and a very good one at that.
The ‘Cats’ musical follows the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles and takes place on the night they make the “Jellicle choice” of deciding which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer to be reborn into a new life. Built around utmost creativity and quirkiness, it is somewhat based on the popular belief of felines having 9 lives.
This musical has been remade countless times by generations after generations of outstanding actors and productions, and now in 2019, we’re preparing ourselves for a movie adaptation of ‘Cats’. Take a sneak peek into the movie’s production and the set!
I think we’re seeing some familiar faces and ones that are sure to make the show great! There’s Jennifer Hudson, of course. Who could forget the diva? We have loved her for her role in Dreamgirls with her popular rendition of ‘And I Am Telling You’. Seeing as she was cast as Grizabella is so exciting and we can’t wait to hear her once again for this role! She shared that she instantly felt the pressure upon hearing that she was going to be in ‘Cats’. But who wouldn’t?!
There’s also Jason Derulo, Idriz Elba, and James Corden, all of whom we know to be great singers in their own fashion. But out of all the cast, a story stands out. Judi Dench is set to play Deuteronomy. What’s beautiful about this is that she was also cast in the first musical in 1981 but she tore her Achilles tendon and wasn’t able to do it. She has been there when the musical began, and now, she was given another chance to participate in the movie adaptation. Turns out her story with ‘Cats’ wasn’t over just yet!
Taylor Swift joins the cast
And, of course, who would be able to look past Taylor Swift? It’s not surprising that she got cast for the musical because she has always been theatrical about her performances. We see it in the way she performs live. Aside from her songs being really emotional, the way she performs it is what makes the whole act so heart-wrenching. Not to mention how good she is at singing. Her music videos also reflect her not being afraid of looking awkward or less than pretty, so long as she’s able to deliver the message. And this is, practically, what theatre is all about! We bet she’s also happy about this, considering her love for cats!
The ‘Cats’ cast also includes some of the greatest dancers of our time including Le Twins and Francesca Hayward. With this, the show is being revamped and updated in the best possible way! ‘Cats’ is an ensemble of the greatest artists in their respective fields, and we can’t wait to see how it will look.
A set larger than life
In order to fit regular-sized humans into the perspective of cats, they had to make a set larger than life. We’re not dealing with green screen here. Imagine the effort and detail it took in trying to make the cast look as small as cats! The first sneak peek was generous enough to take us for a look into some of the giant set that’s going to be used in the movie. By far, this would be the most ambitious film adaptation in terms of casting and set design!
We can’t wait to see the movie, and we’re sure it’s going to be paw-some! But the film is set to be released on December 20, so we’re going to have to wait for a few months!
