Disney has finally dropped the first official teaser trailer for its live-action 101 Dalmatians prequel, Cruella. Putting a modern spin on the origin story of one of Disney’s most popular and twisted villains, the film stars Emma Stone in its titular role.

Much to fans’ surprise, Stone’s portrayal of Cruella De Vil turns out to be too dark and twisted— at least in a dark-and-twisted way we’re not accustomed to. While the fashionable, puppy-loathing, fur-loving antagonist has always been regarded as a symbol of greed and vanity, never in the character’s previous incarnations has she been depicted as chaotic as she appears in the new film. As many audiences have put it, the new Cruella is giving major Harley Quinn vibes.

The trailer, which dropped a day after Disney posted a black-and-white Cruella poster, sees Cruella De Vil wreaking havoc in 1970s London. It also provides some major details about her days as Estella, such as her arrival in London with the goal of becoming a fashion designer, and her relationship with Baroness von Hellman that paved way for her transforming into a raucous, revenge-thirsty chic.

“Cruella” is slated to hit the big screen on May 38th. However, due to the unpredictability of times caused by the pandemic, fans can expect some change of plans. Instead of theaters, the Disney prequel could premiere on Disney+. More information regarding the release can be expected to come in the future.
