The story, the cast, the producers, the director, the music– we’re seeing another classic in the making!
If the epic fantasy genre has The Lord of the Rings, the sci-fi genre has ‘Dune.’ That’s why all eyes are on this new film adaptation by Denis Villeneuve of Frank Herbert’s 1965 classic novel, which has actually inspired some of the greatest sci-fi works we’ve witnessed in the last decades. Titles like Star Trek and Star Wars are said to have been greatly impacted by Herbert’s masterpiece, among many other fantasy films.
While the wait is still long for the premiere of this big-budget epic adventure film, we finally get to have a first taste of what it is gonna be like once it hits the big screen, as Warner Bros. dropped its first full-blown teaser trailer on Wednesday.
In the film, Timothée Chalamet stars as young Paul Atreides, who is tasked with leading his noble family house in a battle to defend their desert planet, Arrakis. The planet is home to what is considered to be the world’s most precious resource, a drug called ‘spice’ which has the ability to provide superhuman abilities.
2020’s Dune is not the first attempt at turning Frank Herbert’s legendary science fiction novel into a film. There was one in 1984 directed by David Lynch starring Kyle MacLachlan, but due to the story being too complicated to be captured in a movie, it didn’t quite live up to the expectation. A Syfy Channel miniseries also happened in 2000.
From what we’ve seen in the trailer, the new ‘Dune’ film has a star-studded cast. There’s Zendaya, Tim’s love interest, as well as Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, Rebecca Ferguson, Dave Bautista, Javier Bardem, and Oscar Isaac. We know that it’s a lot to absorb, which is another reason to believe this is gonna be the best adaptation, yet.
‘Dune’ is slated to premiere in theaters on December 18, 2020.
