Based on the 1988 comic of the same name, Death in the Family follows Jason Todd/Robin as he sets out to reunite with his birth mother after parting ways with Batman. However, he falls into the hands of Joker, who then murders him. Serving as a prequel to 2010’s Batman: Under The Red Hood, Death in the Family will see the return of voice actors including Bruce Greenwood as Batman, Vincent Martella as Jason Todd, and John DiMaggio as Joker.

An interactive short film

As revealed in the trailer by IGN, Death in the Family will pause at certain key moments over the course of the film to present viewers with options determining how the story will proceed. Most of these choices will have something to do with Robin’s fate– all leading up to the ultimate question of whether he lives or dies. This interactive element is somewhat a nod to the 1998 comic’s fan-voting system, where DC gave fans two numbers they could dial to decide if Jason survives or dies of Joker’s murder. (People decided he should die, unfortunately.)

DC Showcase – Batman: Death in the Family is produced by Warner Bros. Animation and DC. It will arrive on Blu-ray and Digital in Fall 2020.
