On Wednesday, March 3, Philippine telecommunications company Smart Communications posted a teaser video featuring a mysterious individual driving a motorbike across a coastal road. The caption reads: “Find out which HERO joins the SMART family tomorrow as we strive to #LiveSmarter for a #BetterWorld.” Netizens were quick to give their best guess, and most of them claimed that the hero in question was Hollywood star Chris Evans.
Still, that did not prevent the internet from collectively gasping in awe when the veil was lifted, revealing that it was, indeed, the Avengers star tapped to become the new face of the brand. As part of its “Live Smarter for a Better World” campaign, Smart’s latest TVC sees the Captain America actor reciting an empowering monologue about how our actions affect the world.
The commercial was directed by Pascal Heiduk, a German filmmaker whose impressive background includes having previously worked with Hugh Jackman and Lewis Hamilton, as well as projects involving mega-popular brands like BMW and Mercedes Benz AMG. While Evans’ speech in the video makes a good point overall, what stuck to the audience is the Tag-lish line at the end, which says, “We have it in our hands to do better. How do I know this? Simple: Smart ako.”
Chris Evans is the latest in the line of “world’s number ones” acquired by the telco giant to be their ambassador. As we know it, the actor is part of the cast of the highest-grossing film of all time, Avengers: Endgame. Recently, Smart has also signed the world’s number one boy band, BTS, to headline its ‘Live Smarter, Live with Purpose’ 2021 campaign.
Aside from being a widely beloved onscreen superhero, Chris Evans is also known for his active involvement in different social, political, and environmental causes. In 2020, he launched A Starting Point, “a civic engagement video-based app that helps voters better understand the issues of the day.” This project, according to its website, is driven by “a mission to create a bipartisan channel of communication and connectivity between Americans and their elected officials with the goal of creating a more informed electorate.”
