The outcry for a Parasite sequel remains loud after a year since the Oscar-winning film hit the big screen. Lucky for the fans, our beloved director, Bong Joon-ho, has been listening.
News flash: Bong’s critically acclaimed movie that forever changed the thriller game is getting two sequels. This information came directly from the South Korean filmmaker himself during his guest appearance on an episode of The Director’s Cut podcast in early February.
“It feels like I’m splitting my brain in half left and right writing these two scripts,” Bong explained, announcing his plans to create not just one, but two more follow-up films to his 2019 black comedy masterpiece. He added that he’s already finished writing one of the scripts, although it remains a mystery which of the two sequels he’s referring to.
While there aren’t too many details announced regarding the sequels, Bong reveals that one of the films will be written in Korean, while the other one in English. The Korean project, according to him, is “located in Seoul and has unique elements of horror and action,” while the English one will be a drama film based on a true story that took place in 2016. Speaking about the genre, he explains, “It’s difficult to define the genre of my films.”
A thought-provoking, anxiety-inducing social commentary on the complexities of class divide, ‘Parasite’ dominated the 92nd Academy Awards for winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film. Ranking as the 46th highest-rated film of all time on Metacritic, many critics and fans alike consider it as the best film of the year.
Aside from the sequels, Bong Joon-ho is also working with HBO for a Parasite TV series. He will be executive producing the show alongside Adam McKay. While details such as the cast, the director, and the release date have yet to be announced, the project was confirmed to be on-going.
