Potterheads, what do you think of a Harry Potter TV series?
A Harry Potter live-action series is currently in early development at HBO Max. This is according to The Hollywood Reporter, whose sources claim that the premium network has been in talks with multiple writers discussing broad plans for a new show set within J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world. While rumors about a Harry Potter show have persisted for quite a while now, this news indicates that there’s progress being made.
However, both Warner Bros. and HBO Max have made it clear that there are no actual deals, yet, as the project is still in early development.
It’s an undeniable fact that Harry Potter is one of the most popular series of all time, both in books and film. The question is: does a TV adaptation sound like a good idea?
I’m sure many Potterheads out there would love to see this plan turning into reality. But I would also understand if some of you wouldn’t be up for the idea of yet another expansion of an already outstretched franchise.
Harry Potter has been an unstoppable force in pop culture ever since the release of the first novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. If you’re a millennial today, chances are, you grew up with it. You grew up with the films, the books, and even the games. And like many things that were part of your childhood, some of them tend to be outgrown. I feel a twinge of sadness just thinking about this, but my interest in any more Harry Potter things has already dwindled down over the years.
Aside from the seven novels in the series being adapted into a successful eight-film franchise, we saw two more prequel spinoffs in the form of the “Fantastic Beasts” film series, with a third one slated for a 2022 release. And then there’s the 2016 play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” which picks up after the events of the final book and tells the story of Harry’s son Albus Severus– a new entry to the Potterverse that fans only deemed unnecessary.
And then there are, of course, the controversies. Series author J.K. Rowling has been at the receiving end of a lot of criticisms over her transphobic tweets. Hollywood actor Johnny Depp was recently kicked out of the Fanstatic Beast franchise due to a lost libel case against British newspaper The Sun, over domestic abuse allegations made by his ex-wife, Amber Heard.
Overall, I think developing a Harry Potter show is a risky move from HBO Max. Sure, a project as big as this can be a major blow against their streaming competitors, if they can pull this one off. But if it turns to be just another bland attempt to make profit out of a widely beloved franchise, then I’ll stick to the Potter-verse that I once knew.
